Tauali'i grand slam lifts Wahine

Junior Amanda Tauali'i's grand slam in the fifth inning proved the deciding hit as Hawaii upset No. 23 Ohio State 4-2 at the Cathedral City (Calif.) Classic softball tournament yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (3-11) lost a heartbreaker to No. 1 Alabama in the nightcap, falling 1-0 to the Crimson Tide in eight innings. Hawaii had the bases loaded in the top of the eighth but couldn't score.

Amanda Locke singled to short, bringing in Kelly Montalvo from third with the game-winner.

Earlier yesterday, the Buckeyes scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first for what would be their only scores off Wahine senior pitcher Courtney Baughman (3-5).

With the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, Tauali'i drilled an opposite-field home run to put Hawaii ahead for good. Ohio State pitcher Kim Reeder, the reigning National Player of the Week, retired the next eight Wahine, five on strikeouts, but got no help from her offense.

Hawaii wins 2 in water polo

The third-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team picked up two victories at the UC Irvine tournament yesterday at the Anteater Aquatic Complex in Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine (8-4) got six goals from Kelly Mason in a 14-10 win over No. 13 Cal State Northridge. Hawaii then came back to beat No. 5 San Diego State 9-5 with junior Leonie van Der Molen scoring three goals.

The Wahine finish the event against No. 2 Stanford today.

Hamamoto leads Hilo pro-am

Hilo pro Jarett Hamamoto carded a 4-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead into today's final round of the 12th Hilo Invitational Pro-Am at Hilo Municipal.

Amateurs Clayton Amuro, Rodolfo Estrada and Nainoa Calip were tied for second at 68. Kevin Hayashi, the event winner in 1999, and defending champion Nick Mason were in a group tied for fifth at 69.

Wahine fall to Bruins in tennis

Melinda Wong was the only Rainbow Wahine to find success Friday as the Hawaii women's tennis team fell to No. 8 UCLA 6-1 in Los Angeles.

Wong, at No. 4 singles, defeated Carling Seguso 0-6, 6-3, retired.

Hawaii (1-4) continues its five-match road trip today at Cal State Northridge.

Silverswords down Vulcans

Mohamed Tangara scored 22 points, going 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, to help Chaminade defeat Hawaii-Hilo 89-76 in a nonconference men's basketball game last night at the UHH gym.

The Silverswords (13-9) hit 30 of 36 free throws in spoiling the Vulcans' senior night. Perry Baggett scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds for Hilo (12-11).

» In the early women's game, the Vulcans celebrated senior night with a 77-53 nonconference victory over the Silverswords.

Junior guard Hina Kimitete led UHH (13-7) with 21 points, hitting all eight shots from the field, including five 3-pointers. Senior forward Sheila Azevedo added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Arielle Salvador led Chaminade (0-22) with 21 points and junior guard Samantha Saito added 18.

HPU sweeps baseball doubleheader

Jacob Valentine's two-run double highlight a ninth-run second as Hawaii Pacific blanked Academy of Art 18-0 in the second game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Field yesterday.

In the opener, the Sea Warriors (7-0) took a 4-0 lead in the second then held off a late rally by the Urban Knights (0-6) for a 5-2 win. Jonah Hobson drove in two runs with a single to right to cap the four-run fourth.
