UH softball team loses on squeeze

No. 9 Tennessee successfully executed a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh to edge Hawaii 3-2 yesterday at the Cathedral City (Calif.) Classic softball tournament.

It was the fifth one-run loss for the Rainbow Wahine (2-10) and second in as many days.

Tennessee (12-1) scored the winning run when Ashley Andrews scored on the suicide squeeze by Lillian Hammond.

Hawaii concludes tournament play today against No. 23 Ohio State then No. 1 Alabama.

Rainbow Wahine survive late charge

The Hawaii women's basketball team survived a late comeback bid from New Mexico State to win last night, 54-51, at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sophomore Allie Patterson led the Wahine with a game-high 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while Keisha Kanekoa added 12 points.

Texas A&M wins Burns Invitational

Texas A&M closed with a final-round, 4-under 272 to win the John A. Burns Invitational by three strokes yesterday at the Leilehua Golf Course.

The Aggies finished at 836 to rally past New Mexico (277-839) and Arizona (284-840). Host Hawaii finished 14th (292-878) and Hawaii-Hilo (297-897) last in the 17-team event.

New Mexico's James Erkenbeck took medalist honors, firing a 5-under 65 to finish at 205. Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus, the leader the first two days, slipped to second after 72-206.

Hawaii's Robert Berton tied for 19th at 212. Stephen Zane tied for 53rd at 219 to lead the Vulcans.

Quarterback Club meeting canceled

The Honolulu Quarterback Club has canceled its weekly luncheon meeting that was scheduled for Monday.

The club's next meeting at the Pagoda Hotel on March 2.

Seasiders win 17th in row, clinch title

J.R. Buensucesco scored 25 points—hitting all five of his 3-point attempts—as the third-ranked BYU-Hawaii men's basketball team extended its school-record winning streak to 17 last night, topping Dixie State 92-77 in St. George, Utah.

Jet Chang scored 17 points and Trenson Akana added 11 points for the Seasiders (20-1, 10-0 PacWest), who clinched the conference championship with the victory as well as a spot in the NCAA II West Regional next month.

Nick Howard led the Red Storm (12-11, 6-4) with 13 points.

» In the earlier women's game at Burns Arena, Dixie State avenged its loss in Laie two weeks ago by defeating BYUH 81-66.

The win kept the Red Storm (14-9, 7-3) unbeaten at home in nine games. The Seasiders (11-11, 5-5) Latoya Wiley had game-highs of 32 points and 20 rebounds to go with her six assists.

» In Hilo, John Smith scored 24 points, including a 3-pointer as time expired, to lift the Hawaii-Hilo men to an 80-78 victory over Chaminade.

Jay DeMaestri added 21 points for the Vulcans (12-10, 6-4).

Jamar Berry had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Silverswords (12-9, 7-4), seeing their three-game winning streak snapped.

In the earlier game at the UHH gym, the Hawaii-Hilo women kept Chaminade winless with an 80-52 victory.

Amanda Adams scored 14 points and Hina Kimitete added 12 for the Vulcans (12-7, 5-5). The Silverswords fell to 0-21 and 0-11.

Vulcans drop softball doubleheader

A combination of too few hits and too many errors led to Hawaii-Hilo losing yesterday's nonconference softball doubleheader 11-3 and 9-5 against Dixie State in St. George, Utah.

The Vulcans (3-7) had four hits but committed three errors in losing the opener. UHH had taken a 3-0 lead in the third only to have the Red Storm (13-1) go ahead for good with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
