Hit-and-run victim was Aiea woman

The woman who was killed in a Feb. 7 hit-and-run case has been identified as Margaret Gordon, 83, of Aiea.

Shortly after 2 a.m. that day, Gordon was walking uphill near the KFC restaurant on Kaonohi Street. Police said Gordon was partially in the roadway when she was struck by what appeared to be a white Cadillac or similar vehicle headed toward Kamehameha Highway.

Gordon died of head injuries, according to the city Medical Examiner's Office. Police opened a felony investigation and are asking for the public's help in finding the driver.

Police said the vehicle should have damage to the right and front side, including its headlights and windshield. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 529-3499.

Hunting knife used in alleged threat

Police arrested a 57-year-old man for allegedly threatening his son.

At about 9:35 p.m. Tuesday the suspect and his 18-year-old son argued at their Aiea home, police said.

The suspect brandished a large hunting knife and threatened his son, police said. Police arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Allegedly stolen check nets arrest

Police arrested a 19-year-old man who tried to cash a check he allegedly stole last week.

Police said that on Feb. 11 a 51-year-old man reported that checks were stolen from his Kaneohe home. On Tuesday the suspect allegedly made a check out to himself at an Ala Moana bank for $900. The bank notified the check's owner, and police were called.

Officers arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree identity theft, second-degree forgery, unauthorized possession of confidential information and second-degree attempted theft.

During the arrest officers found marijuana on the teen, police said. The suspect was also arrested for investigation of a drug charge.

Police warn of worker scam

Big Island police are warning of a scam that fooled a 78-year-old woman out of $6,000.

At about 11 a.m. Dec. 15, a man approached the woman at her house and told her he was doing sewer repair work for the business next door, police said. The man said he needed $6,000 to do the job and that the business would reimburse her.

The woman gave the man the money. When she later confronted the business, she learned she was a victim of a scam, police said.

Police have opened a theft report and are alerting the public to beware of similar claims.

Drunken-driving roadblocks stay up

Big Island police are warning that roadblocks and sobriety tests will continue islandwide after 23 people were arrested for drunken driving during the week that ended Monday.

Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Two were under 21.

So far this year, Big Island police have arrested 154 people on suspicion of driving under the influence, compared with 177 during the same period last year.

This year the Big Island has had 210 major accidents, compared with 250 during the same period last year.

Patient missing from Hilo hospital

Big Island police need the public's help to find a 29-year-old Pahoa man who disappeared from Hilo Medical Center.

Steven Stoesser was being treated for an undisclosed illness at the hospital when a nurse reported him missing from his room Tuesday.

Stoesser apparently left without being medically discharged and still needs treatment for his condition, police said.

He is 5 feet 10 inches tall, 140 pounds, with blond, wavy medium-length hair and hazel eyes. He might have been wearing a hospital gown and jacket.

He has tattoos of the Hawaiian Islands on his right forearm, an American Indian bird design on his upper left arm, a spider web on his left elbow and an arrow band on his left forearm.
