Chico Furtado was upset about his Kalaheo team's lackluster performance going into halftime.

Furtado let his players know in the locker room, and the Mustangs realized what was on the line - their season.

Kalaheo came out with a vengeance after halftime on its home court, putting up a 30-point third quarter and pulling away from Aiea last night, 67-52, in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference tournament.

Senior forward Matt Gasparine-Young battled his way to 18 points and frontcourt mate Christian Kepa added 12. Richard Preza Haynes chipped in 11 as the Mustangs (9-4) led by as many as 22 and advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament against the OIA West's second seed, Campbell, today at the Kahuku gym.

Kory Naeole scored a game-high 20 for Na Alii (2-11), who didn't stop hustling until the final whistle and the end of their season. The West's sixth seed pulled to within eight points at intermission on a 9-1 run.

“;We came out strong, jumped to a big lead (23-7 in the second quarter), and then we have some letdowns,”; Furtado said. “;Some guys start doing things on their own, and get away from the team concept. Next thing you know, it's an eight-point halftime game. That's the ghost that we've been battling all year.”;

Gasparine-Young was the workhorse that put the game away in the third quarter as the Mustangs, the third seed out of the OIA East, opened up the second half on a 14-5 run. The 6-1 senior scored seven of his points in the period by crashing the offensive glass relentlessly for putbacks and getting to the free-throw line.

“;I know my role is to try to get the boards, get an offensive rebound and put it back in the hole,”; Gasparine-Young said. “;That's what I did tonight, battled hard. We really needed this one after a long, hard year. We didn't want to battle all for nothing.”;

Aiea coach Wyatt Tau wasn't able to coach his team because he just returned from a trip, but he was proud of Na Alii's effort. He watched from the sideline as JV coach Gary Ortiz guided Aiea.

“;It's been tough all season, but these guys never gave up,”; Tau said. “;Despite our record, these guys came to practice every day, practiced hard.”;

Marcus Monroe poured in 23 points as Na Menehune outscored the Hurricanes at Kalaheo.

Reece Racoma hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter as Na Menehune jumped out to an early lead and cruised the rest of the way.

Moanalua advances to visit Kahuku, undefeated in league play, tonight.

Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo hit for 29 points to lead the Governors past the Falcons at Radford.

The Govs hit seven 3-pointers - five by Tatupu-Leopoldo - to outgun Kalani, which was led by Hikaru Kumagai's 17 points.
