Wahine playing on without Bolla

The Hawaii women's basketball team will almost certainly be without head coach Jim Bolla at tomorrow's home game against New Mexico State.

The university is investigating a possible physical altercation that occurred between Bolla and a player in the fall and has put Bolla on leave while it interviews team members about the alleged incident. Sources said yesterday the interviews were ongoing.

Bolla has been on leave since the team's road trip to Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State last week Wednesday, and there remains no timetable for his return, UH spokesman Gregg Takayama said yesterday. Associate coach Pat Charity has taken over the team in the meantime, as she did for eight games in the 2006-07 season when Bolla was out with a lung infection.

UH is 5-19 overall, 2-9 in the Western Athletic Conference.

UH men 14th at Burns Intercollegiate

The Hawaii men's golf team is in 14th place heading into today's second round of the 33rd John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Course.

No. 56 Arizona leads the field of 17 teams with a 12-under 276, one stroke ahead of New Mexico. Hawaii-Hilo is tied for last with UTEP at 298.

Arizona's Tarquin MacManus shot an 8-under 64 for a two-stroke lead over Jay Myers of San Jose State and BYU's Jordan Hammer.

Hawaii's T.J. Kua carded a 4-under 68 for a share of eighth place. Vulcans Stephen Zane and Lloyd Motley are tied for 45th after 1-over 73s.

The 54-hole tournament concludes tomorrow.

California teens claim tennis titles

California's Clay Thompson and Tayler Davis won their respective 18s singles tennis titles as the USTA National Championships concluded yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park courts.

The fourth-seeded Thompson defeated unseeded Evan Song 6-4, 6-4 in a matchup of two 16-year-olds.

Thompson and partner Erich Koenig, the third seeds, fell to the fourth-seeded team of Christopher Freeman and Billy Grokenberg in the doubles final.

Davis, seeded eighth, upset top-seeded BrettEllen Keeler 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 for the girls championship. Davis and partner Samantha Critser lost to Sarah Lee and Keeler in a walkover for the doubles title.

Wahine softball game canceled

The Hawaii softball team's nonconference game at Loyola Marymount was canceled yesterday due to unplayable conditions.

The game with the Lions will not be made up.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-8) conclude their two-week road trip at the Cathedral City (Calif.) Classic. They open the tournament against Maryland today.

Seasiders stay atop regional poll

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team remained at No. 1 in the NCAA Division II West Region poll released yesterday.

The Seasiders (19-1, 9-0 PacWest) are 13-0 in the West. BYUH is riding a school-record 16-game winning streak and can clinch the conference title tomorrow at Dixie State.

Chaminade (11-8, 7-3) is eighth in the poll that determines which eight teams make the postseason and where the regional tournament will be held.

BYUH tops HPU in men's golf

Led by medalist Kyle Kunioka, the Brigham Young-Hawaii men's golf team defeated Hawaii Pacific by six strokes yesterday at Turtle Bay.

Kunioka finished with a 1-over 73 on the Palmer Course. The Seasiders carded a 303, while the Sea Warriors finished at 309.

Chaminade also participated in the match but did not figure in the scoring because the Silverswords only fielded three golfers.
