Pro Bowl visitors spent more this year

Visitors to this year's Pro Bowl game—the last one in tourism-strapped Hawaii for at least two years—spent more and stayed longer than last year.

According to a study by Market Trends Pacific Research, the game generated $2.9 million in state excise, hotel and car rental taxes—$400,000 more than 2008.

Overall spending hit $28.6 million compared to just $28 million last year.

The annual professional football all-star game ended, or at least interrupted, its 30-year run in Hawaii this year. It will be played in Miami next year.

State officials and the National Football League are negotiating to play in Hawaii again in 2011.

Rainbow Wahine golfers tie for 15th

The Hawaii women's golf team finished tied for 15th at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif., yesterday.

Junior Corie Hou led the Wahine with a 238, despite having to complete her second round and also play 18 holes yesterday. Monday's second round was delayed by rain.

Hou finished in a four-way tie for 45th. Hawaii tied with Santa Clara at 962, 62 strokes behind champion San Jose State in the 18-team event at Salt Creek Golf Course.

UC Irvine's Hillary Packard took medalist honors with at 218.

Rainbow Wahine drop tennis match

Hawaii fell to UC Santa Barbara 5-1 in a nonconference women's tennis match at Santa Barbara, Calif, yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine's lone win came at No. 1 singles, where Sophie Kobuch topped Michelle Murphy 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. With the Gauchos holding a commanding lead, the doubles matches were not played.

Third-ranked Seasiders win on road

Tsung-Hsien Chang came off the bench for 20 points and Nathan Sims added 14 points and 11 rebounds as the third-ranked Brigham Young Hawaii men's basketball team won its 16th straight, defeating Notre Dame de Namur 86-52 last night in Belmont, Calif.

Lucas Alves added 19 points for the Seasiders (19-1, 9-0 PacWest). Deon Sharpe led the Argos (5-19, 0-11) with 18 points.

» In the earlier game at Walter Gleason Gym, Latoya Wily had game highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the BYUH women's team to a 64-61 victory over Notre Dame de Namur.

Mahina Gao added 14 points and Richelle Fenenbock 13 for the Seasiders (10-10, 4-4). Tanaia Keyes led the Argos (8-15, 4-6) with 13 points.

BYUH tennis teams both win

The Division II second-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team and the No. 27 BYUH men's tennis team picked up wins yesterday in Phoenix.

The Seasiders (6-0) shut out Dixie State 9-0 in the women's match, dropping just one game in three doubles matches and only four games in six singles matches.

The Seasiders (5-1) downed No. 18 UC Irvine 8-1 in the men's match, losing only at No. 6 singles.

Vulcans drop softball doubleheader

Hawaii-Hilo was unable to hold off two late-inning rallies yesterday in dropping a PacWest softball doubleheader against Grand Canyon in Phoenix. The Vulcans lost 4-3 in nine innings and 5-3.

In the opener, the Vulcans led 3-0 before the Antelopes rallied to tie it in the bottom of the sixth. Grand Canyon scored with one out in the ninth—on Tracy Lubken's RBI-single to right.

Grand Canyon (14-3, 2-2) completed the doubleheader sweep by scoring three runs in the fifth on two hits and three errors off the Vulcans (3-3, 1-3).
