Punahou team wins Science Bowl

Punahou School won the annual Hawaii Science Bowl and will represent Hawaii at the National Science Bowl April 30-May 5 in Washington, D.C.

Twenty-three teams of science and math students from 20 schools competed in the Hawaii event Saturday at Honolulu Community College. Four students and one alternate represented each school.

Punahou team members included Eric Liaw, Calder Atta, Anne Kwok, Allison Chen and William Chen with Mike Gearen, their coach and instructor.

The school's math/science department received a $500 award, and the students will receive team jackets and an all-expenses-paid trip to the national competition.

'Iolani School, which took second place, won an all-expenses-paid neighbor island science trip and $400 for its science department.

Baldwin High School on Maui took third and received $400 for its science department.

Kealakehe High School on the Big Island received a $50 cash award for winning the “;Wild Card”; competition. This is a written competition for teams ranking from 13 to 24 after the top 12 move into the elimination round.
