Hawaii's Kaufman honored by WAC

Hawaii's Amber Kaufman was named the Western Athletic Conference women's indoor track and field athlete of the week yesterday.

Kaufman, a 6-foot sophomore and a member of the UH volleyball team, set an NCAA provisional mark in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 11.5 inches at the Northern Arizona Classic on Saturday.

The jump was a UH indoor record and is a WAC best this season.

Kaufman won a gold medal in the high jump at last year's WAC outdoor championships and was fifth in the NCAA championships in that event.

Kawashima leads Pride to state berth

Noelani Kawashima scored 18 points to help host St. Andrew's Priory beat Hawaii Baptist 49-41 last night and earn the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's third berth in the upcoming Division II state girls basketball tournament.

Maryknoll and University have already earned spots in the tournament for finishing in first and second in the regular season. The league's fourth representative will be determined on Friday.

Alves is player of week for third time

Lucas Alves, a junior forward on the Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team, was named Pacific West Conference player of the week yesterday for the third time this season.

Alves, of Casa Branca, Brazil, averaged 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two road wins over Hawaii-Hilo last week. BYUH is 18-1 and 8-0 in the PacWest.

HPU sweeps softball doubleheader

Hawaii Pacific took two softball games from Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday in Laie, 5-3 and 8-1.

Courtney Kessell pitched the Sea Warriors to victory in the first game by striking out six and giving up just one earned run in a complete game. BYUH's Katresha Veazie also gave up a single earned run, but the Seasiders were undone by costly errors in the sixth inning.

In the second game, Maile Kim led the Sea Warriors offensively by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Krystal Plunkett added two RBIs and went 2-for-4. Kahealani Alohikea-Betham drove in the Seasiders' only run.
