Car lands in ravine, duo in hospital

Two men were injured after their car veered off the road and landed in a ravine in Waimanalo, pinning the driver beneath the car early yesterday.

The car carrying two 21-year-old men was traveling on Kumuha Street in Waimanalo near Waikupanaha Street when the car went onto the west shoulder, fell into a ravine and landed upside down, police said.

Emergency officials responded at 2:20 a.m. to find the driver pinned under the car while the passenger remained inside.

Honolulu firefighters had to stabilize the vehicle before removing the man from the wreckage, said Fire Capt. Robert Main. The driver had injuries to the lower part of his body, police said. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while the passenger remained in serious condition, according to Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

Motorbike's speed cited in Pali crash

Speed was a factor in a motorcycle crash Saturday on Pali Highway that nearly killed the 37-year-old driver, police said.

At 8:18 p.m. the Honolulu man was speeding toward Kailua on a red 1998 Harley-Davidson when he lost control coming out of the tunnel, police said.

He hit the right curb and a concrete railing and overturned. He was ejected from the bike and sustained severe head injuries. Police said the man was wearing a helmet.

Paramedics took him to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Police closed the Kailua-bound lanes of the Pali to investigate.

3 are rescued from capsized boat

Firefighters and the Coast Guard rescued three people stranded after their sailboat overturned yesterday about two miles from Ewa Beach, officials said.

At about 10 a.m. a fire helicopter and watercraft spotted the boaters about a mile from shore, said fire Capt. Robert Main.

The Coast Guard's 47-foot motor lifeboat picked up the boaters and brought them uninjured to Honolulu Harbor by 11 a.m., said Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael De Nyse.

It was not clear how the boat overturned, officials said.

Divers persuaded to get out of wind

Firefighters brought back two divers swimming in windy and choppy weather off Nanakuli yesterday.

At about 10:10 a.m. a caller from shore reported divers in distress a half-mile from Electric Beach, said Fire Capt. Robert Main.

Firefighters arrived aboard a watercraft and found the divers OK but coaxed them back into shore because of the weather, Main said.
