DUI busts again pass 1,000 on Maui

Drunken driving arrests in Maui County totaled more than 1,000 last year for the second year in a row.

Police Officer Nick Krau said the frequency of driving while intoxicated has not been affected by the economy.

Alcohol was investigated as a factor in 10 of the 23 vehicle crashes that resulted in 24 deaths on Maui last year. Police said that the year before, seven of the 20 crashes that killed 21 people involved alcohol.

Ethics panel taking applications

Applicants are being sought to fill a vacancy on the State Ethics Commission starting in July.

The commission regulates the ethics of legislators, lobbyists and state employees other than judges. It investigates complaints, provides advisory opinions and enforces decisions.

Members of the commission must be U.S. citizens living in Hawaii and may not hold any other public office. They also may not take an active part in political management or political campaigns.
