Any other year, Roosevelt would be celebrating an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red championship right now.

But thanks to the OIA tournament switching to a double-elimination format, the Rough Riders still have work to do.

Mikela Thoemmes finished with 17 points, 15 rebounds and five steals and Kelcie Namba scored seven of her nine points to lead Roosevelt past Kalani 62-41 last night at Moanalua.

A night after upsetting No. 1 Farrington, the Rough Riders (11-4) secured a spot in the championship game with their fourth win in five nights.

“;I thought everybody on our team played an excellent game tonight,”; Roosevelt coach Clint Chikamori said.

The Rough Riders are the only undefeated team remaining in the tournament, and will try for their third OIA Red title in four years Thursday night at McKinley.

The Falcons (9-7) still have a chance at the title, but will have to win three games next week, including two against the Rough Riders, who have been impressive since Thoemmes returned from an injury.

“;They played well and we didn't,”; Kalani coach George Weeks said. “;That's why they won the ball game.”;

Violet Alama led the Falcons with 12 points, including two baskets early to put her team up 9-4. But Kalani missed its next 12 shots and went 7 minutes without a point as the Rough Riders scored the next 11 to take a six-point lead.

Thoemmes had all five steals in the first half, helping Roosevelt force 11 turnovers by halftime. Joshy Noga had six points and seven rebounds in the second quarter alone

as Roosevelt built a 27-15 lead at the break.

“;I thought we played excellent defense,”; Chikamori said.

Kalani overcame 6-for-32 shooting in the first half by hitting four of its first six shots in the third quarter to pull to 31-25. Roosevelt's Tasia Kamakawiwoole answered with two free throws and hit two mid-range jumpers as the Rough Riders answered with a 13-0 run to put the game out of reach. The Falcons never cut the lead back to single digits.

“;We really worked as a team and picked each other up,”; Namba said. “;Our coach told us to focus on shutting down two key people and I think we did a pretty good job.”;

Alama finished with 12, but was only 5-for-18 from the field. Ashlyn Onaga, who scored 24 a night earlier against Moanalua, was held to nine points on 4-for-14 shooting.

“;We couldn't make any shots,”; Weeks said.

Roosevelt will have four days off while Kalani plays the winner of Tuesday's Farrington-Kailua matchup on Wednesday to get another shot at the Rough Riders a day later.

If Roosevelt loses on Thursday, it would get one more shot at winning the OIA Red title on Saturday.
