”;Loyal to the Land: The Legendary Parker Ranch 1970-1992”;

By Billy Bergin

Island Heritage

$29.95

This is the third installment in a series of books documenting the history of Parker Ranch on the Big Island. One of the largest cattle ranches in the country, Parker Ranch has a long and rich history.

In this volume, Bergin examines an era in which the ranch saw new leadership under Richard Smart, who looked to managers from out of state to try and raise levels of production.

Smart's eventual passing led to a development of a board of trustees to oversee the ranch, which brought with it new challenges for the operation.

In addition to analysis of the management of the ranch, the author also touches upon his role as veterinarian for the company, overseeing the health and welfare of 50,000 head of cattle.

Filled with photographs from the era showing the ranch and its paniolo, the book provides a glance into the rough and difficult world of ranching in Hawaii.
