Roosevelt hands Farrington first loss in OIA tournament
POSTED: Saturday, February 14, 2009
Roosevelt is on a roll and the Governors are in shock therapy.
Once-injured Mikela Thoemmes continued her sensational postseason with 24 points and nine rebounds as Roosevelt stunned No. 1-ranked Farrington 62-60 last night in OIA Red playoff action at Pearl City.
Farrington had a chance to tie or win the game with an inbounds play at halfcourt with 0.9 seconds left. Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo missed a runner from 3-point range at the buzzer.
The sophomore sharpshooter thought she was fouled as she caught the ball when Thoemmes drew close contact.
“;I wanted my defender to go into the screen, but another forward (Thoemmes) picked me up. I tried to lean in and get the foul,”; Tatupu-Leopoldo said.
Roosevelt has come a long way since 31- and 17-point regular-season losses to the Govs.
“;Our first two times, honestly, we thought they were just going to beat us,”; said Roosevelt senior Tasia Kamakawiwoole, who had nine points and 10 rebounds. “;Today, everybody's pumped up. Kela and Nicole stepped up.”;
Roosevelt, 10-4 in league play, will challenge another upstart in Kalani tonight.
“;I'm not surprised that our girls can play,”; Rough Riders coach Clint Chikamori said. “;They gutted it out. They've learned to stay composed when Farrington makes a run.”;
Roosevelt used different defensive looks to smother Farrington's normally prolific low-post scorers.
Lusina Otineru led the Governors with 19 points. Farrington suffered its first OIA loss after 13 wins, but is still in title contention because of the new double-elimination playoff format.
“;We weren't playing defense. We didn't play with heart until the end,”; Tatupu-Leopoldo said. “;We can still come back. We just gotta stay together as a team.”;
Thoemmes, playing with a wrap around her right hand, scored 19 points in the second half despite Farrington's strong, tall defenders in the low post. Her steady ballhandling and scoring righted the ship after Roosevelt fell behind 33-28 early in the third quarter.
Nicole Ramirez, who scored 16 points, connected on two free throws, a 3-point bomb on a feed from Thoemmes and scored a fastbreak layup to give Roosevelt a 39-35 lead.
Farrington responded with a mini-run to take the lead back, 40-39, but Thoemmes dropped in five free throws and a left-handed jump hook as Roosevelt zoomed to a 50-41 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Farrington chipped away and got within 56-54 after Lusina Otineru hit a free throw with 2:12 remaining. The Govs got the ball back, but Natalie Mata and Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo missed tough off-balanced shots in the paint and Ramirez boxed out the taller Otineru for a key rebound.
Ramirez hit two foul shots after drawing the foul, but the Govs got a bucket underneath by Otineru to get within 58-56 with 1:53 to go. Kelcie Namba sank a free throw for Roosevelt for a three-point lead, but Kirsten Liana swished a pair of foul shots to bring the Govs within 59-58 with 1:30 to go.
After a Farrington steal, Tatupu-Leopoldo blew past two defenders from the left wing, but Abcde Furuta-Harada stepped in from the weak side to draw the charge with 1:13 left.
