A 21-year-old University of Hawaii football player was arrested yesterday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman in September and allegedly physically assaulting her and a man last month.

In a statement from UH, coach Greg McMackin said only that “;JoPierre Davis has been suspended indefinitely.”;

Police arrested Davis, who had a shot at becoming a starting cornerback in the fall, on the UH-Manoa campus yesterday for allegedly sexually assaulting the woman between 2:30 and 9 a.m. Sept. 28 in the university area.

Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu would not divulge whether the alleged sexual assault occurred on or off campus, or whether the victim was a student.

Davis' arrest yesterday was also for allegedly assaulting the same woman between 2:35 and 2:50 a.m. Jan. 19 in Waikiki and allegedly assaulting a 26-year-old man in that same incident.

UH Athletic Director Jim Donovan said the university received word yesterday that Davis had been arrested, and immediately took action.

Police arrested Davis yesterday on suspicion of second-degree sexual assault, two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and first-degree burglary for the Sept. 28 incident, and suspicion of second-degree assault of the woman and third-degree assault of the man Jan. 19.

The 6-foot Davis, a graduate of Balboa High School in San Francisco, played in all 14 of Hawaii's games last season as a reserve cornerback and on special teams, notching five tackles.

Davis, who would be a senior in the fall, was expected to compete for a starting job in the secondary in the Warriors' upcoming spring training, because the team lost both of its starting cornerbacks.

Last March, UH football player Keenan Jones was removed from the team after being arrested for unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and second-degree assault, according to a police report.

He was another cornerback entering his senior year and did not return.

Jones was removed from the team after that arrest.

In March 2007 he was arrested on suspicion of felony abuse of a household member and was suspended from the team.

UH spokesman Gregg Takayama said he had no information concerning any report of a student being sexually assaulted on campus in September.
