'Iolani junior Nick Goo just missed a hat trick, but the shifty forward supplemented his two goals with an assist to lead the Raiders past Roosevelt 4-0 in the Division I quarterfinal round of the JN Automotive Group /HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships yesterday afternoon at a wet and windy Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion 'Iolani (12-0-1) advances to today's semifinal contest against Kapolei at 5 p.m.

The Hurricanes (12-5-1) upset third-seeded Kamehameha-Maui, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, 4-0 in an earlier quarterfinal match yesterday.

“;I wasn't sure how it was going to be after a week layoff, the players were anxious to play after seeing each other for that long a time,”; 'Iolani coach Chris Lee said of the down time between the ILH season's end and the start of the state tournament. “;We always want to come out with a quick start. Being able to knock the ball around and possess it, we got into a good flow of the game.”;

The Raiders took a 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute as Marcus Joy unleashed a shot and saw his ball ricochet off a Roosevelt defender and carom into the goal as Rough Riders goalkeeper Jay Tsuruoka dived in the opposite direction.

Goo picked up an assist in the 18th minute, finding Jordon Lee on a looping cross that seemed to hang in the air just long enough for the freshman to punch it into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal to put 'Iolani up by two.

In the 34th minute, Goo notched his first goal, taking a pass from Brock Granger, and curling the ball around the left goal post and past a slew of diving Rough Riders to put the Raiders up comfortably just prior to halftime.

“;With a lot of games in the tournament, you want to try and put the game away early so that you can rest some of your players,”; Lee said.

The Granger-to-Goo connection continued 5 minutes into the second half as the midfielder found the cutting forward in the 6-yard box for an open score on Goo's second goal of the match.

“;The team played really well, and it was good because it gave us the momentum,”; Goo said. “;It should carry us through the rest of the tournament. It was good to get the goals early because we got to rest our starters, and get some people off the bench.”;

'Iolani, in search of its first state title since the 2000 season, held the overwhelming edge in experience with 15 seniors on their roster. Roosevelt, which finished sixth in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, only has three.

“;'Iolani was just too tough for us. They're the number one seed. They're really good,”; said Roosevelt coach Ed Ota, whose squad fell to 9-5-3 on the year. “;I don't think we had any matchup problems, but their skill level is way higher than (that of the) OIA. That's the difference. In the OIA we can compete, in the ILH, I don't know. We're not up there yet.”;
