Bess to appear at HSQ clinic
Former Hawaii receiver Davone Bess, who just completed his rookie season with the Miami Dolphins, is scheduled to be among the instructors at Sunday's Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinic on the UH campus.
Clinics are set for tomorrow and Sunday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at Klum Gym. The cost is $10 (cash only). More information is available online at hawaiispeedandquickness.com or by calling 949-5997.
Tashiro finalist for national award
Kent Tashiro, a successful softball coach at the club and high school levels, has been named a finalist for Positive Coaching Alliance's Double-Goal Coach Award.
Tashiro, a former coach at 'Iolani School, led the Aiea Golden Eagles to two American Softball Association national tournaments, winning the ASA state title in 2003 and finishing second in 2005 and 2007.
The award will be presented at the eighth National Youth Sports Awards Ceremony at Stanford, Calif., on April 24.

Seasiders split with Wildcats in tennis
The Division II second-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team defeated Abilene Christian yesterday, but the No. 27 BYUH men's team wasn't as fortunate against the Wildcats at the Grand Canyon Invitational.
In the women's match, the Seasiders (3-0) downed seventh-ranked ACU 8-1, winning all six singles matches and two of three in doubles. BYUH's lone loss was at No. 1 doubles, where Elwen Li and Yuan Jia lost 9-8 (4).
In the men's match, the Seasiders (2-1) lost to No. 19 ACU 6-3, winning two singles matches and one doubles match.
» Also at the Grand Canyon Invitational, the Chaminade women defeated Dixie State 8-1. The Silverswords (2-2) won all six singles—five in straight sets—and two of three doubles matches.
George Fox tops Hawaii-Hilo in baseball
Dan Winterstein's RBI single in the top of the eighth proved to be the deciding run as George Fox edged host Hawaii-Hilo 7-6 in a nonconference baseball game last night at Wong Stadium.
