Arts academy opens exhibits for contest

The Internet resource Web site Wikipedia is looking for help in illustrating its art-related entries. So why not make it a worldwide fun event?

Place: Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St. Time: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 27 during ARTafterDARK
Admission: $10; $5 seniors, students and military; free for academy members and children 12 and under (Sunday will be a free admission day for all visitors, as part of the monthly Family Sunday event)

With the assistance and coordination of the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the ongoing Wikipedia Loves Art photo “;scavenger hunt”; comes to the Honolulu Academy of Arts this weekend.
Taking advantage of its strengths in Hawaiian and Asian arts, the academy is offering its exhibits for rare picture-taking—no flash, please—with the resulting photos to be uploaded on a specially appointed Flickr Web site for judging (entrants can either work solo or in a team with up to 10 people). Images that are selected for use by Wikipedia will get full credit, and entrants scoring highest will win prizes being offered by the academy.
“;We hope a lot of people sign up and get their clues and participate,”; said the academy's Web project manager Sabrina Velazquez. “;I think it's a good way to engage the community and look at art in a fun way.”;
Working with a “;Wiki-median”; (someone from the site who is knowledgeable about the needs of Wikipedia) and assessing the strengths of the academy's permanent collections, Velazquez said, “;we have Hawaiian art we believe other museums don't have; plus, we have good textiles which Wikipedia was interested in, and a strong Asian art collection.”;
Clues for the event will also involve an African exhibit that opens Thursday and a valentine theme, being that this is Valentine's Day weekend. Other clues involve Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian, European and Hawaiian art.
