For at least two more games, the Kailua Surfriders are alive.

Anu Ah Yun scored 13 points as Kailua outlasted Radford 34-28 last night in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red girls basketball playoffs at Roosevelt High School.

Ah Yun, a force in the paint, was formidable, as was Kailua's backcourt, led by Zsalei Kamaka. Their solid play was essential on a day when leading scorer Ashley Jacobs suffered what may be a season-ending injury. The starting guard injured her hand during physical education class.

Still, the Surfriders were resilient against the quick Rams, who got 17 points from guard Bui Baravilala.

“;We lost our best player, but we pulled together and played nice, strong defense,”; Kailua coach Zach Stephens said. “;All the strong teams have pressed us at times, but we have a strong point guard. Kamaka did a solid job running things for us.”;

Radford seemed to have momentum early in the third quarter behind a swarming fullcourt press. Baravilala scored eight points in a row for the Rams, who had the Surfriders wilting under pressure.

However, Sola Williams connected on two free throws to give Kailua a 20-19 lead with 4:25 left in the third quarter. Baravilala's follow shot near the end of the third quarter tied the game at 21, but Kailua went ahead on another foul shot by Williams, and after Ah Yun scored a bucket and added a free throw with 5:32 to play, the Surfriders spread the floor and Radford never regained the lead.

The Surfriders held the Rams without a point for nearly 8 minutes.

After Williams sank two more free throws with 2:31 remaining, Kailua led 29-21. Radford, which missed its first 12 tries from 3-point range against Kailua's 2-3 zone, finally got a trey from Disa Brown and cut the lead to 29-26 with 1:25 left.

However, Kamaka swished four free throws in a row for a 33-26 lead with 30 ticks left to secure the win. Kamaka finished with eight points.

Kailua, 5-7 in OIA play, will face No. 1 Farrington tomorrow. The losing team will still be alive in the new double-elimination format that takes effect beginning with tomorrow's round.

“;If they have an off night and we play well, we can hope for a win,”; Stephens said. “;They've really been that good.”;

Six state-tournament berths are available for OIA Red teams.

The Governors attended the game during the first half. Farrington won both regular-season matchups with Kailua 66-39 and 56-42.

Radford (6-7) had momentum after upsetting Mililani over the weekend, but saw its season end with last night's loss.

“;In the playoffs, you have to be hitting on all cylinders. That's what it's all about,”; Rams coach Tani Dutro said.

Roosevelt 54, Campbell 43
Center Tasia Kamakawiwoole amassed 23 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter as the Rough Riders pulled away for the win.

Nicole Ramirez added 12 points, all on NBA-range bombs, while low posts Mikela Thoemmes and Joshy Noga combined for 16 points and 12 rebounds to help the Rough Riders take command.

“;We were a little hesitant in the first half, but once we started settling in, we were all right,”; Roosevelt coach Clint Chikamori said.

Ama Lui had 14 points, eight boards and four steals for Campbell. Jazmin Brown added 13 points and five assists, and Oli Kila tallied nine points as the Sabers closed their season at 5-8 in league play. Twenty-four turnovers derailed Campbell, which was the Division II state champion last year.

Roosevelt (8-4) will battle the Red West's top team, Mililani, tomorrow at Farrington High School.

“;Mililani's a real tough, dangerous team,”; Chikamori said. “;Their guards are real tough and they've got a couple of decent posts. We match up similarly.”;

After a 3-pointer by Brown, Campbell had a 13-12 lead late in the opening quarter. Roosevelt point guard Kelcie Namba answered with her only trey of the game moments later, and Campbell never led again.

Roosevelt closed the first half with a 7-0 run for a 29-19 lead.

Campbell's fullcourt press was less effective in the second half and Roosevelt took advantage. The home team opened a 41-24 lead with well-placed entry passes to Kamakawiwoole, Thoemmes and Noga. The visitors got no closer than nine the rest of the way.

“;I still don't think we played our best this year,”; Campbell coach Jody Bantolina said. “;We tried everything we could, but the shots weren't falling.”;

Campbell shot 33 percent (16-for-49) against Roosevelt's 2-3 zone.

Roosevelt fared better from the field (42 percent on 21-for-50 shooting), but didn't finish strong. The Rough Riders were 5-for-16 at the foul line in the final quarter.

Each team had 31 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass.
