Police say biker hurt doing stunts

A 23-year-old Kaneohe woman was in critical condition last night after she crashed her motorcycle while doing a wheelie near Honolulu Harbor, police said.

A traffic investigator said the woman was speeding on a motorcycle and doing wheel stands in the parking lot next to the Falls of Clyde ship at about 12:25 p.m.

While doing a wheelie without a helmet, she crashed and was thrown from the black motorcycle, police said.

She sustained severe head injuries and was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Crews rescue hiker near Manoa Falls

Firefighters rescued a lost hiker yesterday morning after he had spent the night near Manoa Falls.

At about 7:45 p.m. Friday, a woman called to report her boyfriend had gone hiking and was possibly lost. The Fire Department helicopter searched until 9 p.m., said fire spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The searched resumed at about 6:30 a.m. A helicopter located the man somewhere near the Manoa Falls, pulled him out and landed in Lyons Arboretum. Kealoha said he was not injured.

Suspect arrested for alleged threat

Police arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly threatening to kill another man with a pipe.

At about 6:20 p.m. Friday, a 39-year-old man was walking home near the intersection of Pali Highway and Kukui Street when the suspect challenged him to a fight for no apparent reason, police said.

The victim tried to walk away, but police said the suspect picked up a pipe and threatened to kill the victim.

Police were called, and the man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Police say man robbed woman

Police arrested a 29-year-old man who allegedly robbed a woman of her purse and tried to rob a store owner Friday near Chinatown.

At about 4:15 p.m. Friday, police said, the suspect threatened a 49-year-old woman and took her purse in the downtown area.

The same man went to a store near the intersection of North Nimitz Highway and Kekaulike Street, where a 36-year-old man was closing his store, police said. The suspect allegedly threatened to kill the man if he wasn't given cigarettes.

Police were called, and the suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Motorcyclist dies in Big Isle crash

A Big Island man died Friday after his motorcycle collided with a van that turned into his path in Kailua-Kona, Big Island police said.

Police identified the man as Steven L. Carvalho, 29, of Kailua-Kona.

At about 6:45 p.m., a 2006 Toyota van heading south on Kuakini Highway made a left turn in front of Carvalho's 2003 Suzuki motorcycle, police said.

Firefighters found Carvalho, who was not wearing a helmet, under the vehicle, and tried to resuscitate him. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he died at 7:28 p.m.

The driver of the van, a 23-year-old Kailua-Kona woman, was not injured.

Police opened a negligent homicide case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

It was the fifth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with four at this time last year.

Pair sought in pot operation

Big Island police need the public's help to find two men wanted in connection with a commercial marijuana growing operation in Volcano.

Kenneth Ray Pantalion Jr., 23, and Timothy Fondren, 61, are known to frequent areas in Puna.

Pantalion is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. Fondren is 5 feet 7 inches tall, about 155 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Police said Hilo vice officers served search warrants Wednesday on two homes in Volcano and found 395 marijuana plants, 10 pounds of dry marijuana and 7.1 grams of hashish.
