Wahine softball team drops pair

The University of Hawaii dropped two during yesterday's second day of the Paradise Classic, losing to UAB 2-0 and Louisiana State 6-5.

The host Rainbow Wahine were held to one hit by UAB Blazers pitcher Lindsey Croft. The freshman struck out eight and walked four. The Blazers plated two in the third off an RBI double by Cameron Sakes followed by a single by Kayla Orr.

LSU took a 4-0 lead in the second game and then held on for the win. UH's Melissa Gonzalez made it interesting with a three-run homer in the seventh, but LSU pitcher Casey Faile got the final two outs to seal the deal.

Hawaii plays No. 6 Oklahoma today at noon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. A win would put the Wahine in the event's title game at 2 or 4 p.m.

Taylor captures UH-Hilo Invitational

Washington golfer Nick Taylor shot a final-round 2-under 70, edging Southern California's Jamie Lovemark by one stroke to win the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate tournament yesterday at the Mauna Lani North golf course on the Big Island.

Taylor finished the tournament with a 6-under 210. Hawaii-Hilo's Logan Goulding finished first among local collegiate golfers after firing a final-round 2-over 74 and ending with a 10-over 226 to finish 46th place.

In the team competition, Southern California placed first with a 13-under 851. Hawaii-Hilo came in 13th and Hawaii was 17th.

Wahine fall to Cardinal

Stanford's Kelly Eaton scored three goals to help beat the fourth-ranked Hawaii women's water polo team 8-6 yesterday in Palo Alto, Calif.

Senior Kelly Mason scored two goals in Hawaii's second consecutive loss.

The Rainbow Wahine will play Southern California today in the kickoff of the Stanford Invitational.

6 soccer players commit to Vulcans

Hawaii-Hilo announced the signing of six women's soccer players to national letters of intent for the 2009 season.

Joining the Vulcans are defenders Jolene Clark and Taylor Allen, forward Moani Hagiwara and midfielders Lauren Minami, Nathalie Palacios and Lianne Yamane.

Vulcans, Seasiders split doubleheader

Pitcher Sarah Weisskopf pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits and striking out five to lead Hawaii-Hilo over Brigham Young-Hawaii 3-1 yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader in Hilo.

The Vulcans scored three unearned runs on two Seasiders' errors in the bottom of the sixth inning in the comeback win.

» In the nightcap, BYU-Hawaii (1-1) used a six-run second inning to beat UH-Hilo (1-1) 8-7. Catcher Kahealani Alohikea-Betham belted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and ended 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Seasiders.

Sea Warriors upend Urban Knights

Paris Gravely dropped 23 points on seven-of-13 shooting and added six rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific past Academy of Art 85-65 yesterday in a women's basketball game in San Francisco.

The Sea Warriors (9-11) shot 52.2 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from beyond the arc. Tiffany Wilson chipped in 19 points, six assists and six rebounds.
