HPU softball sweeps Azusa Pacific

Hawaii Pacific opened its softball season with two wins over Azusa Pacific yesterday in Kaneohe.

The Sea Warriors scored four runs in the third inning en route to a 9-1 victory in the first of the doubleheader. Pitcher Courtney Kessell allowed only one run on two hits while going 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the first game.

Sherise Musquiz pitched a complete-game, 6-0 shutout with six strikeouts in the second game.

BYUH pounds Grand Canyon in hoops

Brigham Young-Hawaii routed Grand Canyon 101-81 in men's basketball last night in Laie.

Trenson Akana led the Seasiders (16-1, 7-0) with 17 points, and Tsung-Hsien Chang chipped in with 15.

Eric Cuen had 18 points for Grand Canyon, which fell to 10-10 and 3-4.

BYUH's Latoya Wily scored a game-high 29 points. Grand Canyon's Stacy Haddow finished with 27 points.

BYUH players recognized nationally

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Virgil Buensuceso is one of this year's finalists for the Bob Cousy award, an honor presented to the nation's top college basketball point guard.

In his junior season, Buensuceso is averaging 11.1 points and 7.2 assists and is on pace to break the school record for assists per game.

He is only one of two finalists from Division II.

» BYUH's Lucas Alves was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII team.

Alves, a junior from Casa Branca, Brazil, maintains a 3.5 grade-point average while majoring in exercise and sport science. He is averaging 20.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for the Seasiders.

Estrada slips after impressive first day

After shooting a 6-under 66 on the opening day of the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate golf tournament, Vulcans junior Rodolfo Estrada shot 7-over 79 in round two, falling to 1-over 145.

Washington's Richard Lee stands atop the leaderboard at 6-under 138, two shots ahead of the next in line.

In the team competition, Southern California leads the pack at 7-under 569. Washington is in second place at four shots back.
