An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment yesterday charging Leilehua High School football standout Rico Newman with kidnapping and sexually assaulting his estranged girlfriend.
Authorities say Newman, 18, confessed to the crimes.
He is charged with first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping. His bail is $100,000.
Police said Newman assaulted his girlfriend when she went to his Wahiawa apartment Monday to pick up their 2-year-old son. The girlfriend went to Wahiawa General Hospital for treatment.
Newman turned himself in at the Honolulu Police Department's Wahiawa station.
As a junior in 2007, Newman was the punter for the Leilehua team that defeated Saint Louis in the state Division 1 championship. Last year he was a standout running back and punter for the team that lost the championship to Punahou.
