Kahuku moves to top
POSTED: Tuesday, February 03, 2009
Kahuku collected 16 of 24 first-place votes to take the No. 1 spot from 'Iolani in the Star-Bulletin Boys Basketball Top 10.
The Raiders tumbled to No. 3 after a loss to Saint Louis over the weekend.
The Red Raiders (14-1, 9-0 Oahu Interscholastic Association), meanwhile, are unbeaten against local teams, including a pair of two-point wins over defending state champion Punahou.
With a towering frontcourt led by 6-foot-8 Christian Feagai and a savvy backcourt anchored by point guard Irwin Ah-Hoy, the Red Raiders are deep, quick and tough under pressure.
“;It's an honor for them and shows how they've worked hard,”; Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said. “;We've talked about it. It's not about being No. 1 now. It's about being No. 1 after the last game of the season.”;
After an overtime win over Kaimuki on Friday, the Red Raiders had a campout and enjoyed team-bonding activities before crashing in the old wrestling room, Akina said.
“;The kids had a fun night. We practiced early the next day, had a nice breakfast donated from a restaurant,”; the coach said.
On Saturday night, the Red Raiders traveled to Kalaheo to support the Kahuku girls team, which won a nail-biter in overtime.
“;I think the kids are having fun,”; Akina said.
Kamehameha moved up to No. 2 after blitzing Punahou 62-45, the fourth win in a row for the Warriors.
Campbell, co-leader in the OIA Red West, entered the poll at No. 10.
In the Girls Basketball Top 10, Farrington is at No. 1 for the fourth straight week.
