Four Hawaii high school students and one University of Hawaii student have won awards at the Music Teachers National Association's Southwest Division Competitions.

Chandra Susilo of UH-Manoa won the Young Artist String Competition, while Punahou School's Evan Lin took the Junior High School Piano Competition at the contest held Jan. 10 and 11 at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Mary Elizabeth Keller, also of Punahou School, and Andrew Ramos of Moanalua High received honorable mentions in Senior High String and Senior High Piano, respectively. Susilo and Lin will compete against winners from six other divisions in the United States at the association's national conference in Atlanta March 28 through April 1. Also in the national competition from Hawaii is T.J. Tario of Kamehameha Schools, the Southwest Division composition winner.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation gave $10,000 to the Hawaii Women's Business Center as part of its “;Sharing the Joys of the Holidays”; celebration. HWBC provides entrepreneurial counseling and training to women at any stage of owning a small business.

The employees of Anthology Marketing Group raised $7,325 for the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation in its Yule Store, the employees' annual holiday fundraiser. For more than 30 years, the event has raised money for local charitable organizations through silent auctions. More than 400 items were donated to make it a record year of giving.

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii received $20,000 as part of a $100,000 pledge from the City Mill/David C. Ai Charitable Trust. The funds will be used for its new Ohana Career and Learning Center in Kapolei. It will serve more than 1,500 people in Leeward Oahu annually and create 150 jobs.
