Multiple stabbings reported on Oahu

Police responded yesterday to two separate stabbings in Kalihi and Waipahu.

At about 6:15 p.m. a large fight broke out at Kalihi and Lehua streets, and about five victims reported being stabbed, police said. It was not clear who the suspects were or whether anyone was arrested last night.

One patient was taken to the hospital in serious condition, and two were taken in stable condition, said Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

Shortly before 8 p.m. a 50-year-old man stabbed his 26-year-old son during an argument in Waipahu, police said.

Police said officers responded to an argument involving four to five men at 94-273 Pupukoae St. A witness told police the 50-year-old man was holding a kitchen knife before the stabbing.

The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in stable condition with a single stab wound, Cheplic and police said. Police arrested the father.

Shotgun fire leads to man's arrest

Police arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly fired a shotgun yesterday morning in Hauula.

At about 3:15 a.m. the suspect, who was at the victim's house, got into an argument and was asked to leave. He threw a beer bottle at a car parked at the victim's house and left, police said.

The victim and a witness went to the man's house to find out what happened, and the man fired two shots into the air, police said.

When the police arrived at 53-834 Kamehameha Highway, the suspect refused to come out. A SWAT team removed him and found the shotgun. Police arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Woman accused of running down man

Police arrested a 27-year-old woman for allegedly driving her car into a man after an argument last night. According to police, the woman and a man, 28, had gotten to an argument in Kailua around 8:20 p.m. She walked away and returned with her car, police said. She then allegedly drove her car into the man, hitting him.

He was taken to a hospital in serious condition, police said.

The woman fled, and was later found by police at Porky's Bar at 32 Maluniu Ave. in Kailua. She was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

20 drowned off Big Island last year

HILO » The ocean around the Big Island claimed more victims last year than any since 1993.

Twenty people drowned off the Big Island last year. An average year sees a dozen such deaths.

Hawaii Fire Department Capt. John Kapsky says most people drown when they are in rugged, inaccessible regions of the coastline. He says the unpredictable Wailuku River—another area that is not guarded—is probably the single biggest danger area on the east side of the island.

Kapsky says people are increasingly going out to isolated areas and getting in trouble.

He says paddleboards, kayaks, personal watercraft and other activities take people to inaccessible areas.

British woman hurt hiking on Kauai

A visitor from England was injured Thursday afternoon while hiking on Kauai.

The 42-year-old woman, from Staffordshire, England, was hurt while hiking to Hanakapiai Falls.

A park ranger from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources contacted police at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday reporting that a hiker needed assistance out of the valley.

A helicopter located the woman about a quarter-mile from Hanakapiai Falls. The woman was flown to Princeville Airport, where medics were waiting to take her to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.

WAIKIKI

Police aid inquiry into counterfeiting

Police are helping the U.S. Secret Service with a counterfeiting case in which they believe a 20-year-old employee at a Waikiki bank is the prime suspect.

On Friday, the bank owner alerted police after numerous counterfeit bills were found during a cash deposit. An initial investigation found that a female employee is the main suspect, and Secret Service was contacted.

On Saturday, Honolulu police helped Secret Service with the investigation, and drugs were seized. No arrests were made.
