Kamehameha top seed in soccer

Six straight titles earned the Interscholastic League of Honolulu the top seed in this week's HHSAA state girls soccer championships.

Kamehameha, which has won the past three titles, received the top seed and will play either Kapolei or Roosevelt a7 p.m. Thursday in Waipio.

OIA champion Mililani is the second seed, followed by Kamehameha-Maui and Hilo. In Wednesday's other first round games, Kahuku faces King Kekaulike, Waiakea takes on Kaiser and Punahou meets Pearl City.

Kailua will go for its first girls soccer championship as the top seed in the Division II tournament. Kauai is the second seed, Pac-Five is third and Kamehameha-Hawaii is fourth. St. Anthony, Radford, Kapaa, Mid-Pacific, Seabury Hall, Honokaa, Waianae and Hawaii Prep make up the rest of the field. The finals are scheduled for Saturday.

Wahine lose at Idaho, get road split

A career night for forward Tara Hittle wasn't enough to carry the Hawaii women's basketball team past Idaho, as the Rainbow Wahine fell 66-50 yesterday in Moscow, Idaho.

Hittle posted a career-high 17 and Dita Liepkalne added 12 as the only players in double-figures for UH (4-17, 1-7 Western Athletic Conference). The Wahine were looking for their first winning streak of the season but the Vandals notched 13 steals and hit 11 3-pointers in pulling away.

Punahou graduate Shaena-Lyn Kuehu posted 11 points, six rebounds and a team-high three assists in the win for the Vandals (8-10, 5-2).
