Kamehameha rolls over Punahou

When Pii Minns is this good, no opposing team stands much chance.
Minns poured in 26 points as No. 3 Kamehameha overwhelmed No. 4 Punahou 62-45 last night before about 1,000 fans at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Minns' hot shooting and a swarming 2-3 matchup zone helped Kamehameha (14-3) improve to 6-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
“;I'm proud of them. Our effort is always there, but we did a better job of executing,”; Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said.
Coupled with 'Iolani's loss at Saint Louis on Friday, the Warriors now share first place, with an improved chance of securing a regular-season title—and the automatic state berth that comes with it.
“;Pii was hitting on all cylinders,”; Punahou coach Dan Hale said. “;When you have guys who haven't played together a lot like us, a team like Kamehameha will expose that.”;
Minns, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, added 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. He also hit six free throws down the stretch to seal the big win in hostile territory.
“;This feels real good. We knew coming to their house, they'd be real strong,”; Minns said. “;We had a clinic today with the kids, first- to sixth-graders. I loved their support tonight, 100 percent support.”;
Micah Christenson added 14 points, seven boards and three blocks for Kamehameha, which shot 45 percent from the field (23-for-51) against Punahou's man defense. The Warriors also controlled the boards with a 38-25 edge.
Punahou (10-7, 3-3) had an early 5-0 lead, but Kamehameha rallied for a 19-8 lead after Auwae DeRego drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the arc. The Buffanblu then nearly let the game get away because of two technical fouls in the second quarter.
Dalton Hilliard, assigned to cover Minns, was whistled for a foul on a long pass, then drew a technical for his reaction to the call. That gave the senior three personal fouls and he sat the rest of the half, as well as the entire third quarter.
Minns had just three points when Hilliard went to the bench.
Kamehameha did not capitalize on the technical, missing the front end of a 1-and-1 and both technical free throws, then failing to score on the ensuing possession.
Moments later, a collision under the basket led to a foul on Punahou's Kai Gaddis, who was also whistled for a technical foul. Kamehameha came away with a free throw and a pull-up jumper by Minns out of that possession for a 24-12 lead.
“;Our guys have a point, but they've got to keep their heads. You get hammered, but you've gotta play through that,”; Hale said. “;I'd rather they learn this now and not later.”;
After shooting 2-for-20 against Kamehameha's 2-3 matchup zone, Punahou was down 27-14 at halftime. The Buffanblu got a 3-pointer from Matt Feldman and a turnaround jumper in the key by Kimo Makaula to pull within 27-19 early in the third quarter, but didn't get closer.
Christenson swished an open 3-pointer from the left wing, then sank another from nearly the same spot as the visitors opened a 36-24 lead.
“;That was huge,”; Nakanishi said.
Christenson was stoked.
“;That first one ended my drought. The coaches have been encouraging me,”; he said.
Minns hit a trey of his own on an inbounds play, and then scored on a backdoor pass from Damien Teramae-Kaehuaea for a 43-29 lead shortly before the third quarter ended.
Punahou shot 4-for-17 from the field in the final quarter and never threatened.
“;Aside from the free throws, it's a complete win,”; Nakanishi added.
Kamehameha shot just 46 percent (11-for-24) from the foul line.
Punahou had just nine turnovers and shot well from the line (13-for-15), but finished at just 27 percent from the field (13-for-49).
“;We played so hard, wanted it so bad,”; Hale said. “;But we're just not patient enough yet.”;
