Wahine end losing streak at 8

Megan Tinnin scored 22 points and hit a game-winning layup with 17.5 seconds left to propel Hawaii to a 63-61 victory at Utah State last night in Logan, Utah.

UH (4-16, 1-6 Western Athletic Conference) snapped an eight-game losing streak and won its first road and WAC games of the year. The Aggies (10-11, 4-4) had two chances to tie or win on their last possession but missed both.

Tinnin went 4-for-7 on 3-pointers, while Dita Liepkalne added 10 points and Catherine Cho six points and six assists.

Coach Jim Bolla was with the team after departing Honolulu more than a day later than the Wahine players because of a personal issue.

Pac-Five names new baseball coach

Mark Nishiyama was announced as the new Pac-Five varsity baseball head coach yesterday.

Currently the head of the boys intermediate I basketball team, Nishiyama is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound and 'Iolani School.

In addition to serving as an assistant on the Pac-Five varsity baseball squad last season, Nishiyama was also the General Manager of the West Oahu CaneFires from 1995 to 1998.

'Iolani soccer coach steps down

Mark Nied is stepping aside after three seasons as girls varsity soccer coach at 'Iolani.

Nied, a 1979 'Iolani gradate, guided the Raider girls to a record of 42 wins, 12 losses and seven ties.

UH tennis team opens with loss

The Hawaii women's tennis team fell to San Diego State 4-3 Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The singles matches were split 3-3. UH's Sophie Kobuch defeated SDSU's Julia Trunk in straight sets at the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-3. Anja-Vanessa Peter and Aglae Van den Bergh also won their matches for the Wahine.

The Aztecs secured the victory by taking two of the three doubles matches, with Kobuch and Van den Bergh giving the Rainbow Wahine their lone doubles win.
