Vehicle hits woman crossing street

A 69-year-old woman was struck by a Honda multipurpose vehicle yesterday while walking in a marked crosswalk across Keeaumoku Street near Rycroft Street.

Police said the pedestrian may have been crossing against the traffic signal when the 6:05 a.m. accident occurred.

The Honda was traveling in the rightmost lane on Keeaumoku and went through the intersection with Rycroft when it hit the pedestrian.

Police said the woman was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with apparent head and bodily injuries but was later upgraded to serious condition.

The Honda was driven by a 73-year-old Honolulu woman, who was not injured.

Suspect wanted in assault and theft

Big Island police want help from the public in finding a man who assaulted a 22-year-old woman and stole her mo-ped on Jan. 13 in Kalapana.

Police said the woman was riding her mo-ped south on Route 130 near the 17-mile marker when she was stopped by two men riding in a red Honda.

A man exited the car and began to yell at her. He then allegedly hit her twice on the head and pushed her to the ground, police said. The man then drove off on the woman's mo-ped, following the Honda, which continued south on Route 130.

The man is described as 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet tall, 170 to 180 pounds, with a short-trimmed mustache.
