Super Bowl in Hawaii proposed

Rep. John Mizuno (D-Kamehameha Heights/Kalihi Valley) has introduced a bill to establish a Hawaii Super Bowl Task Force that would pursue bringing the NFL championship game to Aloha Stadium.

The task force would be responsible for developing a plan that would be presented to the NFL for consideration. The responsibilities include determining how Hawaii can meet the NFL's criteria and having a report ready for the 2010 legislative session.

Currently, Hawaii does not meet the basic stadium criteria of 70,000 seats. Aloha Stadium seats 50,000.

Kahuku hosts pre-Super Bowl potluck

In honor of Kahuku High alumni Chris Kemoeatu and Aaron Francisco playing in Sunday's Super Bowl, a community tailgate and potluck is scheduled tomorrow at the Red Raiders' football field.

The event runs from 6 p.m. until midnight and includes food, karaoke, music and a tribute to Kahuku assistant coach Salesa Maiava.

Francisco is a safety and special teams captain for the Arizona Cardinals. Kemoeatu is starting left guard for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Seasiders capture 11th straight

Lucas Alves scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds to lead fourth-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 96-81 victory over Chaminade in a Division II men's basketball game at Cannon Activites Center.

It was the 11th consecutive victory for the Seasiders (14-1, 5-0 PWC), who got 15 points from Trenson Akana and Nathan Sims. Virgil Buensuceso added 12 points and 10 assists, and Tsung-Hsien Chang came off the bench for 13 points.

Mohamed Tangara had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Silverswords (9-8, 5-3). Noah Gottlieb added 16 points.

» In the earlier women's game, Latoya Wily scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 69-46 win over Chaminade.

It was the fifth straight victory for the Seasiders (9-7, 3-2). BYUH also got 13 points and five steals from Richelle Fenenbock.

Samantha Saito scored 20 points and Ayla Mull added 14 for the Silverswords (0-17, 0-8).
