Kauai man, 20, arrested after fire
KILAUEA, Kauai » A Kilauea man was arrested after allegedly trying to set fire to his home and then barricading himself in his home for several hours.
Police took Shannon Mahoney, 20, into custody Monday, charging him with second-degree arson for setting an intentional fire on the kitchen stove. He is in police cellblock awaiting a preliminary hearing, county officials said.
Mahoney had barricaded himself in his residence when police arrived Monday afternoon.
During the incident, police considered Mahoney to be a threat to himself and others nearby, police officials said, and they evacuated neighbors as a precautionary measure, blocking off Kuhio Highway for several hours.
After negotiating for more than three hours with Mahoney, police officers placed him in protective custody at around 7:30 p.m. He was treated and released at Wilcox Hospital for self-inflicted injuries, county officials said.
