Woman in hospital after ocean rescue

HILO » A 26-year-old woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition yesterday after she nearly drowned at Honolii Beach Park north of Hilo, Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel said. Her name was not released.

Responding to a 10:49 a.m. call of a swimmer in distress, rescue personnel found that lifeguards had already brought her to the beach and were performing resuscitation, they said.

First Battalion Chief Darren Rosario of East Hawaii said the woman, a frequent beachgoer at Honolii, was found underwater by surfers. She was pulled to shore, not breathing, and lifeguards began CPR, and applied a defibrillator, and her pulse and breathing resumed.

Police ID victim in diving death

HILO » A Big Island man who apparently drowned Monday while free diving off Lapakahi State Park in West Hawaii has been identified by police as Michael Morriss, 23, of Waimea.

Morriss was found early in the afternoon in 80-foot-deep water about 200 yards offshore from the park, about 38 miles north of Kailua-Kona, police and fire rescue personnel said.

He had been diving from a boat with two partners. When they realized he was missing, they spotted him on the ocean floor but were unable to recover his body because of the depth, officials said.

Free diving involves swimming without equipment to significant depths. Rescue personnel had to use scuba gear to recover his body.
