Aggies sizzle, Wahine fizzle at the end

The effort was there, even if the first Western Athletic Conference win for Hawaii wasn't.

Utah State closed the game on a 8-0 run to win 52-43 and keep the Rainbow Wahine winless in the WAC before a gathering of 184 last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawaii (3-16, 0-6) dropped its eighth straight game and remained in last place. Utah State (10-10, 4-3) gradually pulled ahead late with 33.3 percent shooting over Hawaii's 25 percent.
The Wahine hustled for offensive rebounds (19) and loose balls all night. But after Megan Tinnin hit a 3-pointer and dropped in a back-door layup to pull her team to within 44-43 with 1 minute, 45 seconds left, UH wouldn't score again. Hawaii missed its final seven shots, including six 3-point attempts.
Sharpshooting USU guard Ana Pares lit up UH with 23 points on 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. Point guard Danyelle Snelgro made a clutch 18-footer off a crossover to put the Aggies up 46-43 with 1:16 left, and then sank four free throws to seal the win.
“;We were trying to do what we had to do to win the game. We were in the game, the effort was great,”; UH coach Jim Bolla said. “;We just couldn't make some shots when we had to make some shots. We're still not happy, but it's better effort.”;
The Wahine are still winless in 2009, but might have something to build on as they take to the road next week against USU again on Friday and Idaho on Sunday. They outrebounded their opponent (41-34) for the first time in four games.
Tinnin scored 14 points for the second straight game and freshman center Rebecca Dew added a career-high 11 while playing in front of her father for the first time at UH.
“;I think as a team we played a lot better with effort, and with rebounding, we definitely stepped it up,”; said Dew, who went 7-for-8 at the free-throw line. “;We played better, and it's about getting better each game.”;
Bolla went away from the team's recent platoon substitution system because of Utah State's larger personnel. Instead, he went with a more by-the-books lineup.
Hawaii clung to a tenuous lead throughout the first half and went into the break up 23-21. But behind Pares' shooting in the second half (she scored 18 of her points after halftime) the Aggies stayed with the energetic Wahine. USU shot 7-for-14 on treys for the game.
“;We knew 15 (Pares) could shoot the ball—we just had some breakdowns,”; Bolla said.
Every UH player wore a pink ribbon to honor longtime North Carolina State women's coach Kay Yow, who died on Saturday from breast cancer.
