Wahine's slide hits 7
POSTED: Saturday, January 24, 2009
The Hawaii women's basketball team has woefully gone where it has never gone before.
Hawaii dropped to 0-5 in the Western Athletic Conference for the first time after last night's 71-45 loss to Fresno State at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A gathering of 205 watched the Wahine (3-15 overall) fall in an alternating barrage of their own turnovers (27) and Bulldog 3-pointers (12).
After Fresno State (13-6, 4-2 WAC) extended to a 20-point lead at halftime, the Bulldogs maintained a wide margin until the game's final moments. The defending conference champions held Hawaii to a season low in points and swept the season series for the second straight year.
UH dropped its seventh consecutive game, a season worst, and is still winless in 2009.
“;We don't go out to the court every day and say, 'We want to lose,'”; junior Megan Tinnin said. “;I don't know what it is, it just seems like nothing's going for us.”; She sighed. “;I'm lost, I really don't know why we're struggling right now. We just need one win ... one win, and we can go from there.”;
It's the longest losing streak for the Wahine since the 1994-95 season, when they dropped 11 in a row.
Hawaii coach Jim Bolla still thinks the last place Wahine can “;get over the hump”; and get into the thick of the WAC race.
“;We still got time to make a move,”; Bolla said. “;We just gotta get more consistent with people working hard and not taking it easy.”;
Tinnin led UH with 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting off the bench, and was the only Hawaii player in double figures. Hawaii attempted 20 fewer shots than Fresno State.
