Top-ranked Govs sink Falcons

POSTED: Thursday, January 22, 2009

The Lady Governors didn't flirt with the century mark this time, but they certainly toyed with danger.

Top-ranked Farrington got 17 points from Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo and 16 from Kirsten Liana to outlast the run-and-gun Kalani Falcons 81-66 last night.

Farrington (12-4) stayed atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East standings with a 6-0 mark. Kalani (5-5) dropped to 2-4 in league play despite hitting 11 3-pointers, including five by guard Ashlyn Onaga (24 points). The visiting Govs won the first meeting between the teams 95-71 on Dec. 30.

A boisterous crowd of about 400 at Earl C. Holmer Gymnasium saw the home team rally from a 21-point halftime deficit to within 69-61 on Corie Kuia's 3-pointer with 3:08 to go.

From that point, Kalani, which nailed eight treys in the second half, ran out of bombs. Tatupu-Leopoldo sank a pair of foul shots and, after a Kalani turnover, Farrington regained momentum.

Liana saved an errant pass by a teammate, then hit Sofia Folaumahina in the low post for a three-point play. That gave the Govs a reasonably comfortable 74-61 lead with 2:35 remaining. Kalani got no closer.

Govs coach Caroline Tatupu was happy about the first half, when her team surprised the Falcons with fullcourt pressure, causing 25 turnovers.

“;We played a lot better defense in the first half, but Kalani did a good job in the second half. They came out aggressive and we had a little confusion,”; Tatupu said.

Using a four-guard attack from the perimeter, Kalani had Farrington's two post players chasing on the perimeter.

“;My toes hurt from all the running. I had to go out and match up with a guard,”; said Liana, a forward who added a game-high 11 rebounds to her 6-for-12 shooting from the field.

Folaumahina added 12 points, six boards and two blocks for Farrington, and center Lusina Otineru had six points and eight caroms. The Govs won the battle on the boards 48-29, including 20 offensive rebounds.

Violet Alama, making a strong comeback from an offseason ACL injury, had 10 points and 12 boards for the Falcons. However, poor free-throw shooting derailed Kalani, which shot 33 percent from the line (7-for-21).

Farrington shot 42 percent from the field (31-for-73) and 67 percent from the line (18-for-27). Kalani shot 39 percent from the field (24-for-62), falling well short of its goal of 80 shot attempts per game.
