Sunbather OK after being run over

WAILUA, Kauai » The Kauai sunbather run over on the beach Sunday by a large truck will likely be released from the hospital today, Kauai officials said.

The 38-year-old woman from Puhi, Jacqueline Bigno, is in very good condition at the Queen's Medical Center, said county public information officer Mary Daubert, quoting hospital officials. The driver of the pickup truck, Kawai Watanabe, 20, of Wailua, was arrested at the scene for two bench warrants. Daubert said police have also opened a negligent-injury investigation into the accident.

There is no driving permitted on state beaches.

County and state officials ask that anyone who sees people driving on the beach should note the vehicle's license plate number, or take a photo, and call police dispatch, 241-1711.

Teen hit with pipe as brawl escalates

Police arrested a 22-year-old man after he allegedly hit a teenager with a pipe.

Police said that at about 10 last night, the suspect was fighting in Kalihi with another male, whose age was not disclosed. When the 16-year-old brother of the second male intervened, the suspect hit the boy's hand with a pipe, police said.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree assault. The boy suffered only minor injuries, police said.

Man allegedly assaults officer

Police arrested a 39-year-old man Tuesday after he allegedly hit an officer who was trying to arrest him.

At about 2:15 p.m., police found the suspect, wanted on a parole retake warrant, in Palolo. The suspect fled when he saw the officers, police said.

Police chased the suspect, and when they caught him he used a set of keys to hit an officer, causing minor injuries, police said. The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Condominium fire blamed on smoking

A fire in a 36th-floor unit of a Waikiki condominium-hotel Tuesday was caused by unattended smoking, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

The 8:43 p.m. blaze at the Hawaiian Monarch, 444 Niu St., caused $50,000 in damage to the unit where the fire started and the unit on the floor below. Most of the damage was caused by water and smoke, Seelig said.

The sole occupant, a man approximately in his 70s, was evaluated for smoke inhalation at the scene and refused further treatment, Seelig said.

Man, 28, arrested in attack on ex

Police arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly abused his ex-girlfriend and damaged the windshield of her car with his head.

The suspect and the 34-year-old victim ended their relationship about a year ago, police said. At about 7 p.m. yesterday, while the woman was stopped in traffic in Wahiawa, the suspect allegedly forced his way into her vehicle and physically abused her.

Police said the suspect became so upset, he bashed his head against the woman's windshield, shattering it. The woman was then allegedly forced to drive for several blocks until she escaped and called for help.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of kidnapping, unauthorized entry into a vehicle, felony abuse and fourth-degree criminal property damage.

Motorcyclist killed in crash on Maui

WAILUKU » A Maui man died yesterday after the motorcycle he was driving hit a vehicle in Kahului.

Jonathan Davis, 21, of Kahului, was traveling east on Hana Highway about 6:50 a.m. when he hit a vehicle making a left turn onto Wakea Avenue, police said. The 45-year-old woman operating the vehicle was not injured. Davis was wearing a helmet.

Davis' death is Maui County's first traffic fatality this year, compared with one at the same time last year.
