'C' is about cool and composed for the Campbell Sabers.

Keeping their heads in the midst of a furious Radford rally, the Sabers shot 19-for-23 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 78-66 win over the Rams last night.

Boosted by Zachery Manuel's 20 points and 19 from Patrick Ward, Campbell (11-3) improved to 5-0 in the wild Red West of the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Before a small, but rowdy crowd of about 300, visiting Radford (10-5) suffered its first league loss after four wins.

Staying cool was a big factor for the Sabers in a wild fourth quarter, when they outscored Radford 29-26. Campbell saw a 13-point second-half lead dwindle to just 2 after Radford sharpshooter Quintin Kimura drilled a trey from the right corner to bring the Rams within 57-55 with 4:21 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, however, Radford guard Jefferson Fiesta was called for a blocking foul at midcourt. Frustrated by an earlier foul call near the basket, Fiesta reacted by scowling and throwing a mini punch in the air. That drew a technical foul and turned into a five-point possession for the Sabers.

Manuel sank both ends of a 1-and-1 bonus for Fiesta's personal foul, then hit one of two shots for the technical. After Timothy Hurd hustled after a loose ball and hit a putback, Campbell had a 62-55 lead with 3:55 left.

That doused what had been a remarkable 13-4 run by the visitors.

“;That was the turning point,”; Campbell coach Zaricke Jackson said. “;(Fiesta) threw a punch and directed it toward the referee.”;

Campbell, meanwhile, never came close to losing composure on both ends of the floor despite tenacious man-to-man defense by the Rams. The Sabers had only nine turnovers and Ward hit all five of his foul shots in the final quarter.

Ward, who grew in the offseason and now stands 6-foot-4, had a quiet 19 points and five boards. His presence and muscle were factors even though he sat the entire second quarter with foul trouble.

“;Usually, we are level-headed. If someone gets mad, we calm them down,”; Ward said.

Radford got within 62-57 after Jaeane-Brad Fontenot hit a foul shot with 3:22 to go, but the Rams got no closer.

Radford coach Wayne Keys chalked up the loss and is ready to move on.

“;I'm not going to comment (about the technical foul),”; he said. “;We worked hard to get back in the game, then we had a couple of turnovers and fouls. Campbell is a pretty good team. We just made too many mistakes.”;

Reacting to the whistle, Keys added, is not something he recommends.

“;It was the heat of the moment, a judgment call. Our kids can't get upset about calls,”; he said. “;We'll learn from it. Our players just gotta learn to walk away. The officials didn't cost us the game.”;

Guarded by Campbell's defensive stopper, Nick Daniels, Kimura struggled and scored just three points by halftime. However, Daniels switched over to cover Lee, allowing Kimura to catch fire in the second half. Kimura drilled seven treys to finish with a game-high 26 points.

Derrell Lee added 23 points on 9-for-12 shooting for the Rams and hauled in seven boards before fouling out.

Kristian Manuel added eight points, five boards and five assists for the Sabers.

The Sabers were outrebounded by Radford in every quarter but the fourth, when they had a 10-6 edge.

“;We had to keep Radford off the boards,”; Manuel said. “;We saw the film and they crash all five guys.”;”;

Campbell shot 82 percent from the line (32-for-39). Radford was less successful at 64 percent (14-for-22). The Rams committed 16 turnovers.
