Woman accused in assault with paddle

Police arrested a 37-year-old Honolulu woman who allegedly struck her 41-year-old female roommate with a wooden canoe paddle.

The woman turned herself in to police yesterday in connection with the Dec. 22 assault.

Police said the women were arguing when the younger woman hit her roommate with a paddle on the back of the head, causing a wound that required three staples to close.

Police arrest man in armed robbery

Police arrested a 22-year-old man after he allegedly carjacked a vehicle in Kalihi and robbed a store in Kaneohe with a loaded shotgun.

At about 8:30 p.m. Monday, the suspect approached a vehicle stopped at a red light in Kalihi, aimed a shotgun at the 21-year-old male driver, ordered him out of the car and stole the car, police said.

The suspect then drove to Kaneohe and allegedly robbed a convenience store, firing off a round from the shotgun as he fled. Police posted an all-points bulletin, and an officer in Kaaawa spotted the suspect, police said.

The suspect was stopped at the intersection of Lau Place and Kamehameha Highway in Kahuku, and arrested on suspicion of two counts of robbery, auto theft, reckless endangering, a firearm violation and driving without a license. The shotgun was recovered, police said.

Parolee arrested for striking officer

Police arrested a 39-year-old man yesterday after he allegedly hit an officer who was trying to arrest him.

At about 2:15 p.m., police found the suspect, who was wanted for a parole retake warrant, in Palolo. The suspect fled when he saw the officers, police said.

Police chased the suspect and when they caught him he used a set of keys to hit an officer, causing minor injuries, police said.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Kalihi robbery suspect sought

Police are looking for a man who they say robbed a 70-year-old woman in Kalihi on Monday.

Police said the suspect displayed the butt of a handgun from his waistband, and demanded money from the woman at about 7:50 p.m.

The suspect fled before police arrived.

Suspect arrested in home burglary

Police arrested a 19-year-old man at his Waikiki home Monday after he allegedly burglarized a Salt Lake home and stole a vehicle while the resident was on vacation.

Police said a 55-year-old Salt Lake resident returned from vacation at about 5:50 p.m. Monday and found his home had been burglarized and his vehicle stolen from his garage.

Police said witnesses saw the suspect driving the victim's car and saw him with items that belong to the victim.

Suspect caught in car break-ins

Police arrested a 20-year-old man after he was seen allegedly breaking into three cars.

At about 7:45 p.m. yesterday, residents in a Kailua neighborhood said they saw the man break into three cars parked in driveways.

As officers arrived. the suspect was fleeing in a vehicle but the officers stopped him. He was arrested for investigation of three counts of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

NORTH SHORE

Waialua duplex destroyed in blaze

Fire destroyed a Waialua duplex, leaving two men homeless, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The American Red Cross is assisting the men, who lived in one of the units. No one was home at the time of the 2:39 p.m. fire yesterday, and no one was injured.

Both units in the duplex were destroyed. The fire apparently began in the attic with heavy smoke coming from the eaves when firefighters arrived, Seelig said.

Damage was estimated at $220,000 to the structure and $5,000 to its contents.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

WEST OAHU

Suspect accused of theft from store

Police arrested a 44-year-old man Monday who allegedly stole merchandise from the Sears department store at Pearlridge Center Monday morning.

The man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft at the shopping center at 10:20 a.m.

WAIKIKI

Unattended smoke caused condo fire

A fire in a 36th floor unit of a Waikiki condominium-hotel yesterday was caused by unattended smoking, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

The 8:43 p.m. blaze at the Hawaiian Monarch at 444 Niu St., caused a total of $50,000 damage to the unit where the fire started and the unit on the floor below.

Most of the damage was caused by water and smoke, Seelig said.

A man who was in his 70s who lived in the unit that caught fire, was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, and refused further treatment, Seelig said.

A sprinkler system quickly brought the fire under control, Seelig said.
