Kahuku moves into No. 2 spot in hoops poll
POSTED: Tuesday, January 20, 2009
They're as high as Christian Feagai can reach.
Feagai, Kahuku's 6-foot-8 center, is one part of a big red machine that has the Red Raiders on a roll. Though they were idle last week, Kahuku collected more votes and moved up to No. 2 in the Star-Bulletin Boys Basketball Top 10. 'Iolani jumped into the top spot.
The Red Raiders have yet to lose to a local team; their only loss was to California powerhouse Campbell Hall three weeks ago. Two of Kahuku's wins have been over defending state champion Punahou. Their three wins in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play have been by an average margin of 22 points—and two of those foes are ranked in the Top 10.
Don't expect the Red Raiders to ease up on the gas pedal anytime. Coach Hiram Akina has his antennae on guard for everyone in the East and West.
“;Be aware of Kalaheo. Chico (Furtado) can prepare his guys, and trust me, they will get better as the season goes on,”; said Akina, who spent the past two seasons guiding Mililani's program.
“;That Radford win (over Mililani) could give Radford a lift in the West. I think coach (Wayne) Keys prepared his guys well to get a big win over the bigger and more experienced Trojans.”;
The top six teams in the girls poll remained in the same spots.
