UH women lose sixth in a row

The Hawaii women's basketball team was dealt its sixth straight loss by Nevada, a 69-50 decision last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

A gathering of 319 watched the Rainbow Wahine (3-14 overall) open the Western Athletic Conference season 0-4 for the second time in three years.

Nevada (10-7, 4-0) dominated the Wahine on the backboards (a 45-23 advantage) and shot 7-for-10 on 3-pointers, while Hawaii was 0-for-5 from deep.

Keisha Kanekoa led UH with 13 points. Dellena Criner led UNR with 12 points and eight assists.

Cohen shines at Rainbow Invitational

Hawaii freshman Douglas Cohen placed first in the 3-meter and platform events at the Rainbow Diving Invitational yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.

Cohen won the 3-meter final with a score of 301.75, with fellow freshman teammate Thomas Rugg placing third with 264.50 points.

Cohen had a score of 330.95 to win the platform final. Hawaii junior Emma Friesen won the 1-meter competition with a score of 300.55.

Wichmann earns 2 top-5 finishes

Annett Wichmann placed third in the shot put and fourth in the high jump in the Lumberjack Invitational yesterday in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Hawaii women's track and field team opened its 2009 indoor season with multiple top-10 finishes. Senior Emily Sheppard finished second and freshman Sarah Saddleton placed third in the high jump.

Junior Jessica Custance tied for second in the pole vault and sophomore Anika Borden was third in the weight throw.

In running events, Sam Whitehall finished fifth in the 800-meter and Tava Tedesco placed sixth in the mile.

Wily leads Seasiders over Argonauts

Latoya Wily notched a double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii past conference foe Notre Dame de Namur 69-61 yesterday in Laie.

Richelle Fenenbock added 18 points and five assists for the Seasiders (6-7, 2-2), who outrebounded the Argonauts (5-12, 2-4) 40-28.
