More checkpoints set for holidays

The Honolulu Police Department is increasing sobriety checkpoints during the upcoming holidays and celebrations, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day.

Extra checkpoints will be set up at unannounced times and locations through Feb. 28.

As of Jan. 8, five people have died in traffic crashes on Oahu. Two of those crashes were related to alcohol and speed.

At the same time last year, two people died in crashes on Oahu. For all of 2008, 46 people were killed on Oahu in traffic crashes.

Police are also continuing with regular weekend checkpoints from October to September as part of the federal program to hold checkpoints every week.

Tunnel tours aid animal sanctuary

The Hawaii Animal Sanctuary is holding its annual World War II tunnel tours charity fundraiser and rummage sale today in Kailua.

The tours of the former World War II tunnels will run on the hour from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are being conducted for a nominal donation. The rummage sale will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the tunnels and includes plants, knickknacks, clothes and other items.

The underground tunnels, used as fortification for the island and which had two 8-inch naval guns at both ends, are near the Aikahi Shopping Center right above Aikahi Fire Station, at 221 Iliaina St. in Kailua.
