Homicide victim Damaso Domingo's family says he was a caring and generous person, and they are pleading for help to find his attackers.

Fifty-four-year-old Domingo died Thursday night from injuries sustained after being severely beaten early Tuesday morning in his Lanakila neighborhood.

Domingo's former wife broke down, crying uncontrollably at a news conference at the main police station yesterday, after speaking about how he cared for his invalid mother.

Daughter Shirley Domingo, a resident physician in the intensive care unit at the Queen's Medical Center, was on duty when a badly beaten man was brought into the hospital.

After the man was stabilized, Shirley Domingo was part of the intensive care unit team that worked to keep the man alive.

She discovered the man was her father after receiving a call from her brother.

Domingo is also survived by a son and another daughter, and nine grandchildren ranging in age from newborn to 17 years, police said.

Domingo was found unconsciousness and severely beaten at 2 a.m. Tuesday near North School Street and Lanakila Avenue.

Witnesses said they saw two men, both in their 20s, who apparently had an exchange of words with Domingo as they passed him on the street.

  Honolulu Police have opened a homicide investigation after the man found beaten in Liliha early Tuesday morning died.

  The family said Domingo would often go for a walk late at night to buy a pack of cigarettes.

Police said they do not know what precipitated the incident, and do not have a motive. They do not suspect robbery since Domingo left his wallet at home, Buffett said.

Domingo had no criminal history. A small utility blade was found on his person, but he did not pull it out, police said.

Witnesses provided descriptions of the two men to a police artist yesterday who came up with composite drawings of the men.

Police hope the attackers live in the area “;only because if they're in that area, somebody's going to know them,”; Buffett said. “;They'll be a familiar face in the area.”;

Police believe that is a likelihood since they simply walked away on North School Street, leaving Domingo's badly beaten body, and headed toward Lanakila Housing.

Witnesses described the first suspect as 5-foot-6, wearing a black-and-white shirt, and the second as 6 feet tall, weighing 220 pounds, wearing a blue shirt and long pants.
