The third-ranked Waves outblocked No. 11 Hawaii 17.5-7 when stuffing the Warriors' upset hopes. Senior All-American Paul Carroll shook off a slow start to put down a match-high 18 kills as Pepperdine won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener between the two 24-30, 30-23, 30-24, 30-22.
A crowd of 1,169 (2,271 tickets) saw the Waves improve to 2-0 overall in 2 hours and 23 minutes. The Warriors (1-3) dropped their MPSF opener for the fourth straight year.
A decision expected by noon this morning will determine whether the rematch is at 7 tonight or 9 tomorrow morning. As of last night, it was to be played as scheduled.
Regardless, Hawaii has little time to regroup. Sophomore hitter Brennon Dyer led the team with 14 kills but had just three in the final two sets.
“;It's a lot about self-confidence,”; Dyer said. “;We have some but not enough.
“;Pepperdine's block was there all night, but they just started closing better. We'll just keep working hard.”;
Dyer got some help—nine kills from Matt Rawson in his first full match of the year, nine from freshman Gus Tuaniga—but it wasn't enough. Pepperdine countered with 17 kills from Cory Riecks, 12 coming in the final two sets, and 14 from Matt McKee.
The difference, though, was at the net, where Tyler Jaynes was in on nine blocks and Carroll and Rodnei Santos six each.
“;I thought we had our moments, just not enough of them,”; Warriors coach Mike Wilton said. “;We just couldn't sustain it.
“;Brennon gave us a huge lift, but our outsides got predictable. They need to hit higher and with more range.”;
In terms of consistency, the Waves got better at it as the match wore on and the Warriors got worn down. Still, “;I think this is the best team Mike's had in the past few years,”; Pepperdine coach Marv Dunphy said. “;We just talked about it with our team. We have got to be ready for them tomorrow ... or whenever we play.”;
There was no doubting Hawaii's success in Set 1. Senior setter Sean Carney ran a very diverse offense, with Tuaniga, Dyer and Rawson all hitting above .375. The Warriors also outblocked the Waves 3-1, only to be outblocked 16.5-4 the rest of the night.
“;We've just got to come back hard tomorrow,”; UH middle Steven Grgas said. “;We know we can beat them, we did it last year. We can do it.”;
Pepperdine won the dig battle 64-59, with five players in double-digit digs, led by setter Kasey Crider's 14. Carney and junior libero Ric Cervantes each had 16 digs for Hawaii.
Note
The Hawaii women's spring match has been scheduled against NCAA semifinalist Nebraska for Thursday, March 19. Husker coach John Cook told his booster club board of directors yesterday the trip had been confirmed.
Last week, Rainbow Wahine coach Dave Shoji said plans for a spring match had not been finalized. Nebraska last played a spring exhibition in Hawaii in 2005.
