Weather plays havoc on area events

Forecasts of high winds and stormy weather led the Department of Education and most private schools yesterday to cancel today's classes across most of Oahu.

The sports leagues followed suit. All Oahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu sports events scheduled for today have been postponed.

The OIA will reschedule its 10 varsity basketball games originally planned for tonight.

The OIA also moved its wrestling matches from today to tomorrow, weather permitting.

The ILH will reschedule varsity basketball and soccer games originally on tap for tonight.

Last night, three OIA basketball games were canceled—Kaiser at Waialua, Pearl City at Waianae and Kalani at Castle.

HBA's Palmer named finalist

Hawaii Baptist junior Sarah Palmer has been named as one of 25 finalists for national junior of the year by prepvolleyball.com.

Palmer who has verbally committed to Texas, helped lead Hawaii Baptist Academy to a second straight Division II state championship last fall by posting 34 kills in the title match against Word of Life Academy. On the season, Palmer averaged 4.43 kills per set and 2.43 digs per set.

Palmer has some elite company. Also nominated for national junior of the year is reigning prepvolleyball.com sophomore of the year, Falyn Fonoimoana from Mira Costa High in California, who has already committed to play for USC.

Hawaii drops match to Cal

No. 25 California downed No. 55 Hawaii 6-1 in men's tennis yesterday at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex.

In the team's first regular-season dual match of the season, the Warriors fell in five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to the Bears.

Hawaii sophomore Dennis Lajola picked up a win at the No. 1 singles position in two sets, 7-5, 7-5 over No. 49 Kallim Stewart.

Sascha Heinemann and Spencer Mendoza defeated Zach Gilbert and Thai Tu 8-4 for the lone UH doubles win.

Balanced Sea Warriors win

Adrian den Dulk was one of five Sea Warriors in double figures with 19 points as Hawaii Pacific defeated Notre Dame de Namur 82-65 last night at the Blaisdell Arena.

Jason Curtis added 16 points and Cliff Hodge had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Rishi Kakad and Jeff Ingram added 10 for Hawaii Pacific.

» Taylor Craig and Mana Hopkins each scored 14 points as the Sea Warriors women's basketball team remained undefeated (5-8, 2-0) in league play with a 67-61 victory over Notre Dame de Namur last night at the Blaisdell Arena.

Tiffany Wilson and Paris Gravely each added 10 for Hawaii Pacific.
