Radford cools off Mililani

All that summer sweat is paying off for the Radford Rams.
The Rams, who trained diligently in the offseason, got the most out of their conditioning by hitting 13 of their 17 free throws in the final quarter to upset No. 5 Mililani 65-57 last night at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.
Radford (9-4) improved to 3-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West, knocking off one of the hottest teams in the state. Quintin Kimura led the Rams with 23 points, including 4-for-4 accuracy from the line in the final 3 minutes. Swingman Derrell Lee added 17 points and 14 rebounds.
“;We did our conditioning all summer and we're still doing it now,”; Radford coach Wayne Keys said. “;We know if we keep it close, by the fourth quarter, we can kick it up another gear.”;
Radford committed just one turnover in the final 8 minutes, as Keys implored his team to buckle down.
“;Coach said, 'Box out! Put a body on him!' We had to keep our intensity up and play our game,”; Lee said.
Mililani center Reid Pangelinan did his damage with 13 points, 15 rebounds and four of his team's 10 blocks. Reginald Griffin added nine points and six boards, and Nick Demusis had six points and four blocks as Mililani (9-3) dropped to 2-1.
The Trojans shot 3-for-14 from long range (21 percent) and committed 21 turnovers. Twelve of the giveaways came in the second half, when Radford switched to a 3-2 matchup zone.
“;It's mostly about defense,”; said Kimura, who hit three treys. “;We knew Mililani wanted to go to big Reid.”;
Lee nailed four of his last five foul shots to help give Radford a cushion in the final minutes.
After 12 lead changes, Radford went ahead 52-51 with 4:40 left on Jaeane-Brad Fontenot's drive to the bucket. The Trojans tied the score two more times, including a jumper from the left elbow by sophomore Bokodaka Keto to knot the score at 55-all with 2:34 remaining.
Radford handled Mililani's fullcourt pressure—just one turnover in the final quarter—and scored five points in a row. Lee hit a pair of foul shots and guard Joash Panglinan turned a steal into an easy layup. After Kaleo Victorino hit a foul shot with 1:35 to go, Radford led 60-55.
A moment later, Hassan Richardson cut through the paint and knocked over Victorino, who drew the charge and gave his team the ball back. Demusis' breakaway dunk brought Mililani within 60-57 with 58 seconds left, but Radford put the game away on foul shots by Lee, sophomore T.J. Reid, Kimura and Fontenot.
It was a frustrating loss for Mililani, which took a 41-36 lead midway through the third quarter, but couldn't quite shut down Kimura's streaky shooting.
The first quarter rollicked at a frenetic pace, much to Mililani's liking. The visitors led 22-19.
“;I'd rather go uptempo and make use of our size,”; Mililani coach Edward Gonzales said. “;When the game slows down, some of our players get impatient and stop going inside-out.”;
The Trojans will get another shot at Radford when the Rams visit Central Oahu later in the season.
