'Iolani makes case for No. 1

The sequel is promising, to say the least.

When 'Iolani and Kamehameha meet again, there will probably be even more bruises and collisions than they had last night. Second-ranked 'Iolani got 13 points from Pablo Warner and escaped with a 44-42 win over No. 1 Kamehameha before 500 fans at the Father Bray Athletic Complex.

'Iolani (13-3) improved to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu despite committing 23 turnovers, including nine in the final quarter. Kamehameha's relentless defense was largely responsible for that. The Warriors rallied from a 40-29 deficit to within 40-36 on a free throw from Blake Viena with 2:31 remaining.

'Iolani had a somewhat comfortable 44-38 lead after Trevyn Tulonghari fed Warner for a fast-break layup with 35 seconds to go. However, Chaz Bajet drove for a tough bank shot in the lane, and after a backcourt turnover by the Raiders, Micah Christenson tipped in a miss by Shane Matayoshi to bring the visitors within 44-42 with 10 seconds left.

Tulonghari missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 8.6 seconds on the clock and Kamehameha, without a time out left, raced up court. Matayoshi's 3-point shot from the corner missed, and Christenson was short on a tip-in from 5 feet out, and then was short on a difficult putback at the buzzer.

Kamehameha (10-3) slipped to 2-1 in league play after committing 23 turnovers of its own against 'Iolani's zone press.

“;We should've used more ball fakes and attacked more,”; senior guard Pii Minns said. “;We know that we didn't play our best game. That's just the way it is.”;

Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi praised his team.

“;Our boys had a helluva effort in the second half,”; he said. “;This loss is on me.”;

The Warriors outrebounded 'Iolani 33-24, grabbing 14 offensive boards. However, they shot just 31 percent from the field (16-for-52) and 45 percent from the foul line (5-for-11). Perhaps more telling, Kapimehameha often hesitated to attack the rim after getting past 'Iolani's initial defenders at midcourt, opting to set up the halfcourt offense instead.

“;We have quick defenders that can corral them, and we do a good job taking charges under the basket,”; said Warner, who confirmed that the Raiders work on drawing offensive fouls every day at practice, sometimes for 30 minutes.

Christenson, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, led Kamehameha with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Bajet added eight points, and Minns finished with five points, five boards and five steals. That trio shot a combined 10-for-32 from the field.

Kela Marciel had two key blocked shots in the final quarter, and swiped four of his team's eight steals.

“;The only positive is the effort was there and we won the game,”; 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

After starting the preseason ranked No. 3 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, the Raiders are No. 2 in the latest poll and are likely to be at the top when next week's poll comes out.

Mugiishi wants continued development.

“;It's early. We're just 3-0 now. There's nine more games in the ILH season,”; he said. “;If we don't match everybody's improvement, a 2-point win turns into a 10-point loss.”;

'Iolani shot 40 percent from the field (16-for-40) and 58 percent (7-for-12) from the line.

Kamehameha senior forward Auwae DeRego sat out with a torn ligament in his ankle and a broken nose, injuries suffered last week against Punahou. He had surgery on the ankle last week.
