Rainbow Wahine still looking for win

Make it 0-for-5 in 2009 for the Hawaii women's basketball team.

The Rainbow Wahine dropped the final game of a three-game road trip last night, a 70-61 loss at Boise State, and their fifth straight to start the new year.

Point guard Keisha Kanekoa led the reeling Wahine (3-13, 0-3 Western Athletic Conference) with 18 points. Forward Tara Hittle added 10 points and 11 rebounds—her first double-double of the season.

UH led 34-27 at halftime, but yielded an 18-4 run to start the second half, matching last year's 0-3 road start to WAC play.

Heather Pilcher led BSU (9-8, 2-1) with 16 points, and Courtney VanBrocklin added 15.

Dungy retires as Colts coach

INDIANAPOLIS » Tony Dungy has retired after seven years as coach of the Indianapolis Colts, saying this was the right moment.

“;These seven years have been better than I could ever have imagined,”; Dungy, the only black coach to win a Super Bowl, said at a news conference yesterday. “;I just have to thank everyone.”;

He will be replaced by associate coach Jim Caldwell.

Dungy is the Colts' franchise leader in victories. He went 85-27 in the regular season and 7-6 in the playoffs, including the victory over Chicago in the 2007 Super Bowl.

“;You don't always get to go out on top,”; Dungy said, “;and it's hard to go out on top.”;

Crenshaw takes Jacobsen's place

KAANAPALI, Hawaii » Defending co-champion Peter Jacobsen withdrew from this weekend's Champions Skins Game because of a shoulder injury, and was replaced by Ben Crenshaw.

Jacobsen, who teamed with Fuzzy Zoeller to win last year's event with six skins worth $320,000, said he tweaked his left shoulder while hitting balls last week.

The 54-year-old Jacobsen says out of respect for the event, he did not want to participate if he was not at his best.

Crenshaw, a two-time Masters champion and 19-time PGA Tour winner, will make his first Skins Game appearance.

The 57-year-old Texan and Zoeller will face the teams of Jack Nicklaus-Tom Watson, Greg Norman-Jay Haas and Gary Player-Bernhard Langer in the $770,000 event that starts Saturday.

Tangara named player of the week

Mohamed Tangara was named the Pacific West Conference men's basketball player of the week yesterday after leading Chaminade to two road conference victories last week.

The Silverswords' senior center from Mali averaged 21.5 points and 10.5 rebounds as Chaminade beat Notre Dame de Namur and Grand Canyon. He shot 60.9 percent from the field (14-for-23) and averaged 2.0 blocks per game.

» Hawaii-Hilo junior guard Hina Kimitete was named the PacWest women's basketball player of the week after leading the Vulcans to a 3-0 week and a 2-0 start in conference play.

Kimitete, a 2005 Konawaena graduate, averaged 14.7 points per game, shooting 65.4 percent from the field. She made 17 of 26 field-goal attempts, including 16 3-pointers (62.5 percent).
