Kahuku torches Kalaheo's box-and-1 'D'

When Hiram Akina speaks, the Kahuku Red Raiders listen.
Reminded last night by their coach about Kahuku's struggles against Kalaheo in recent years, the Red Raiders broke away from a 20-all stalemate for a 52-36 rout of the Mustangs before 400 fans at Thomas Walker Gym.
Third-ranked Kahuku overcame a box-and-one defense by Kalaheo and went on a 27-11 run in the second half to secure a key win in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East. The Red Raiders improved to 8-1, 3-0 in the conference by beating Kalaheo for the first time in three seasons.
“;I know Chico (Furtado). I knew they'd go box, especially with Jray (Galeai) not there,”; Akina said. Galeai, a Star-Bulletin All-State/Fab 15 guard, is at BYU for a football recruiting visit.
Kona Schwenke had nine points and eight rebounds, and Aulola Tonga had eight points, seven boards and two steals to anchor Kahuku under the glass.
“;We went upstairs (at halftime) and Coach said we looked tired and talked about how we'd lost to them the past couple of years,”; Tonga said, noting that Kahuku hadn't beaten its nemesis since his freshman year in 2006.
Nehoa Akina, the focus of Kalaheo's box-and-one defense, finished with eight points, but it was his backcourt buddies who came through.
Mikeli Damuni and Sage Kaka drained key 3-pointers during the second-half run, making up for the absence of Galeai.
Shairone Thompson, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, moved to small forward and provided an extra boost on the boards in the second half.
The run was sparked by Tonga, a 6-foot-3 senior, who hesitated before swishing a trey from the left corner to give Kahuku the lead for good at 23-22 early in the third quarter.
“;That's a designed play,”; coach Akina said. “;He has no problem shooting it at practice.”;
Kalaheo struggled once Kahuku switched out of its man-to-man defense to a 2-3 zone. The Mustangs shot just 4-for-15 in the third quarter and missed seven free throws—their season-long Achilles' heel.
“;They flooded one side and we didn't play smart, didn't match up,”; Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. “;Tonga hit a big 3, but Aaron (Fernandez) makes a layup and we're down just four.”;
The Mustangs were within 35-31 late in the third quarter, but didn't score again until Richard Preza Haynes hit a 15-foot jumper with 4:21 left in the game. By then, Kahuku led 47-33 and coasted the rest of the way.
It was a tough loss on the road for a team that outrebounded the taller Red Raiders (35-32), but shot 43 percent from the foul line (10-for-23) and 25 percent from the field (12-for-48).
“;Sixteen second-half points. It's been a struggle for us, the inconsistency,”; Furtado said. “;Kahuku is the team to beat. I don't see anyone in the East beating them right now.”;
This early in the season, coach Akina isn't getting too excited.
“;We're just trying to get better for the next game,”; he said. “;This win gives us momentum and more confidence for our players. As much as we missed Jray, our guys stepped up.”;
