Officers find suspect in fatal crash

Police arrested on Friday a 31-year-old Waipahu man in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a 47-year-old motorcyclist last month in Waipahu.

At 5:12 p.m., the suspect, who lives on Leonui Street, was arrested at the Pearl City police station on suspicion of second-degree negligent homicide and accidental death and later released pending investigation, police said.

On Dec. 29 at about 3:20 p.m., Lindsay Kane was driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle along Farrington Highway near Aniani Place when a blue truck veered in front of him and hit him. The pickup truck driver fled. Police found the truck the following day on Leonui Street, but the driver had not been located.

Car hits pedestrian walking on sidewalk

A car veered off the road and hit a man in his 60s walking on the sidewalk on Kalanianaole Highway in Niu Valley yesterday afternoon, police said.

The man, who was not identified yesterday, was in critical condition after the 11:40 a.m. accident. Police said a 2003 Toyota four-door sedan, driven by an 89-year-old Hawaii Kai man, was Koko Head-bound in the lane next to the sidewalk when it jumped the sidewalk, hit a tile wall and a hydrant before striking a man at about 11:40 a.m.

The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with severe head and body wounds.

Police said speed, drugs and alcohol were not apparent factors.

Motorcycle crash puts rider in hospital

A 57-year-old man was in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle near the Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor, police said.

Shortly before 2:57 a.m. yesterday, the man lost control of a silver Harley-Davidson motorcycle while turning left onto Malakole Street from the harbor, according to traffic investigators. The motorcycle went off the road and struck a concrete piling, throwing the man off the motorcycle.

Police said the victim suffered severe head injuries and was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police said speed was not a factor, and were still investigating whether alcohol as involved.

Tourist dies after snorkeling off Kauai

A 66-year-old man from Canada apparently drowned yesterday afternoon while on a snorkeling tour near Kuhio Shores on Kauai, according to a county news release.

The man began having trouble at about 1:40 p.m. and an instructor began helping him get to shore, the news release said. Lifeguards with a personal watercraft brought the man to shore.

The lifeguards and a firefighter performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man, who was pronounced dead at Wilcox Hospital.

 

WINDWARD OAHU

Man arrested in stolen car

Police arrested a 19-year-old Manoa man yesterday after he allegedly assaulted a police officer who caught him napping in a stolen car.

At about 7:30 a.m., a 41-year-old police sergeant approached the illegally parked car at Heeia Kea Pier, police said. The officer woke the man up and then allegedly saw him try to start the car with a screwdriver and drive away. The two men struggled and the man punched the officer in the mouth, police said.

Both men were treated at the hospital and released, the officer for minor facial injuries and the man for exposure to Mace.
