Open house celebrates rebuilt Waianae church

Waianae members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are hosting an open-house party next Saturday to celebrate restoration of their church, which was damaged two years ago in a fire.
The 10 a.m. event at 85-576 Old Plantation Road will give neighbors and supporters a look at the rebuilt multipurpose building, which includes a gymnasium, kitchen, classrooms and offices.
Waianae stake president Voi Ray Taeoalii said many members of other churches and the Leeward community turned out to offer support and sympathy after the deliberately set fire Sept. 11, 2006.
Mormon officials declined to say how much the construction cost. The fire caused an estimated $2.5 million in damage to the facility, according to news reports at the time.
The multimillion-dollar construction project by Jacobson Construction of Salt Lake City enlarged the previous building, adding almost 12,000 square feet for a total of nearly 20,000 square feet. It has been modernized with air conditioning throughout, handicapped-accessible bathrooms and a sprinkler system and fire alarm system, according to a church release.
“;Our members are stimulated and strengthened by this,”; Taeoalii said. More than 1,500 members of three wards, or congregations, continued to use the 44-year-old chapel that survived the fire. Other meetings were held in members' homes and at a Leeward school.
The congregations began using the complex surrounding the cultural hall, which converts into a basketball court, in early December. It will be formally dedicated later this month.
Two 13-year-old Waianae boys were charged with first-degree arson for the fire. The teens and a 12-year-old boy were also charged with second-degree burglary for breaking in and vandalizing the church a week earlier. They were prosecuted in Family Court, and the outcome is sealed.
“;We don't harbor ill feelings against the youths,”; Taeoalii said.
